classic that coddy lmao. I've seen people who have been stung and just went to hospital for antihistamines. They all said it was really bad pain and their hand did swell. My biggest fear when teaching kids. We've caught a fair few of them over the years but it's one of the things they get taught prior to fishing

there's two types, greater and lesser weever. The greater weever has a more potent sting, i've stood on one at brighton beach luckily it was a lesser weever and just felt like a throbbing pin prick and tingling for a few hours

i got sung off a fish dint no wat it was it was in the sand on the hall beatch it hurt 4 abit till i had a hot bath and tuck the sting out of it

Used to work om Tynemouth Becah as a lifeguard and seen many people stung by weavers. They all reacted differently, have seen kids react very little or with no effect at all, and have seen big muscle bound blokes crying with the pain

Parker tools at the metro centre have medical style forceps for £3 I use a pair of them to unhook any weavers I catch, 8" of steel between you and the spines, never been caught by one yet and I don't intend to start.

By the way they eat them in the med - they just snip off the offending spines and clean them up and then chuck them in a stew - Jamie Oliver was eating them on one of his programmes.

Yeah, come to think of it I remember some Rick Stein program in France where they hoy all fish into a pan to make fish soup, weavers included.

glad u liked the story lads i still laff everytime i think of it now haha! any way them greater weavers must be the ones i seen when i was in puerta rico on a charter trip with me dad years ago, the skippers mate was using an handline down side of boat with a 2hook rig on with little strips of squid n he was catching the odd little puffer fish and other little bonny fish then he got this weaver i couldnt believe it it was massive ( for a weaver ) it was easy 10X the size of the ones ive seen , he caught loads of them and was just wacking them with a little knocking stick and getting them off ( not touching spines) i couldnt believe the size of them mind. its a wonder they didnt get the filleting knife out

ive seen 2 lads get stung by weavers but i myself havent thank god, any way the first case was on steetly makereling about 8 year ago 1 of the lads, chunk swung his feathers in with 3 small fish on , a whitey a little billet and a weaver on the bottom hook, has there was quite a few small whiting about that day, he just grabbed it thinking it was a whitey and i heard IIYA YOU BA*TARD, and he dropped it , i laffed my cap off lol any way his hand didnt swell or anything ? i can only come to the conclusion that cos hes such a big lad (about28stone) that the poisen didnt affect him ...... now this one yav got to laff at ....

i was about 15 and me cuisin was working on the trawlers he was about 18 so on the summer holidays i went away with them trawling one night for soles, we hauled up n the skipper headed for home n me n me cuisin were sorting the catch there was plenty of weavers amongst it and i was taking care with them lol , any way we get to the bottom of the catch and thers 2 weavers laid there on top of the last few plaice so i went to grab 1 of them by its tail and it slipped out me hand .. me cuisin thought he was the top trawlerman and said ' OUR GET OUT THE WAY IIL GET IT' so he grabs it by the tail and went to through it over the rail , has he done this it spun round and stuck straight in his finger hahaha i couldnt stop laffing has he shouted 'ahhhh the little c**t got me !!! anyway he takes his glove off and within 5 mins his finger is like a good pork sausage , now ive always heard ya meant to put heat near the wound to draw the poisen out ( ie a lighter close to the wound or the end of a tab) and hold it there for aslong as u can. he thought better of this and proceeded to suck the poisen out of his finger lmao, i thought no more of it then the next day his finger was cushty, the only problem he couldnt talk properly ... yeah you guessed it the poisen had got into his tounge and it was swellled right up and yellowish in colour.... hahaha i laffed my head off and said thats what you get for pushing me out the way and saying you would do it!! if i remember rightly im sure he ended up on antibiotics then it cleared up .

Just after getting hit by mine I was sweating like Pavarotti in a disco. From what your saying if it had penetrated the skin it would have been sesh over and off to Wansbeck Hospital!

FOOK ME better off sucking the poison out ,rather than go to wansbeck hospital .Infact better off cutting the affected limb off dousing it in sea water and carry on fishing ,than even think about the wansbeck hospital.

My mum bought one from the fish stall at Romford market when I was a kid. I can't remember what it tasted like, so it can't have been that bad. She didn't buy it again though, so it can't have been that good either, I suppose.

On the other was a nice little golden coloured fish, I took it off and was pricked by its spines. The only real effect was an itcheness a bit like a mosquito bite can't say I suffered much.

But I'm wiser now !

Emergency treatment is just to imerse the area in water as hot as you can stand, it breaks the toxins down. Pain killers and a quick check over at the local A&E.

im a tropical marine fishkeeper, we have a few little `tards` in the fishkeeping game that hit as bad if not worse than weavers, been hit by a couple nasty ones and standard practice is plunge the affected part into hot as you can stand water, needs to be done asap though which aint always possible on a beach, one the reasons i dont mix milk in my flask, carry it separate, just in case, i can use it in place of hot water then, the smaller lesser weaver is the most poisonous and if someones got a bad ticker actually capable of killing them !!

Used to work in an aquarium, trying to hand feed a Volitans that was refusing to take dead food was always fun!
I love the Pterios Radiata more though, so much more delicate looking.
