totally forgot about catching the Garfish until the skipper said "Is nobody gonna try for Garrrfish".
I put the float on and three very small sort of small japanese lure things from a ready made up pack (6 on trace so cut in half).I put a bit of maccy on the bottom hook.(had got this method from another member on forums).
I had to cast underhand and fortunatly the tide took it away from the boat. Within a minute or so i felt something hit the bait.I struck and missed, but the skipper said next time let the fish take the bait.
Reeled in and put some mackeral belly on the rest of the hooks. Same again underhand cast and within a minute or two down the float went. I had hooked one when i reeled it in it got off however a second one also took some bait. This one i landed.
There was only one other lad on the boat with a float and he geared up and caught another. The other guys looked a bit cheesed off.
Because i had a new species which scored well i then had to make a decision. Carry on catching garfish at one point each up to a maximum if nine or try for another species.and score at least ten points for a new species. I had seen lovely fish caught such a cuckoo wrass which looked spectacular. A trigger fish, red gurnards, dogfish etc. The first of each species scoring well. So i decided to drop down on the bottom again. The lad next to me had a good late run with some nice pollack. Me i just blanked.
If i was to go there again i would use flourocarbin line with flowing traces. The more experienced anglers used this method and scored well.
Dorset won the competition but they were fishing in there own back yard.
