What do you do when the cod dies off?

Ive only been fishing since september and i was clueless. i started as the maccy season was ending. i went to blyth pier and everybody was spinning but nothing catching.
next week i went everyone was float fishing and im getting funny looks with me dexter wedge and carp rod. the looks were even funnier when i pulled a couple in and no one else caught anything. i kept it hush id just foul hooked em though and i wasnt fully satisfied i had actualy caught them.
anyway next time out, i go all prepared with floats and a few garden worms(still with an argos carp rod lol) and the funny looks start again as everybody else is fishing with beachcasters off the bottom.
anyhow next step, get a multiplier i thought! so i got a multiplier and didnt want to look silly putting it on a carp rod so i hit blyth pier again with a deep sea multiplier and a boat rod and the old funny looks start again.
ok so i got all the right gear now and had varied success between seaham to amble, i still get funny looks as my gear is whats known technicly as crap, so now ive got my crap gear which by the way has been catching more than some people ive been near with all the best clobber but it appears the season will be closing soon.

so the question is what next? with what? where and when?

were coming up to a very quiet period, march - may..

fish move off to spawn so there is little to catch and mainly small, but it you stick it out you will find a few size fish about in the right conditions.

but.... if you head to the rivers with your carp rod there are a few nice flounders still in the rivers with a few supprises.

once you get towards june the rivers will fill up with flounders right up past newcastle on the tyne and the a19 on the wear.

eels will also become a pain and theres still a few supprises about.

july and you,ll be waiting for the mackerel to start showing again.

all the summer species will be arriving ... coalfish, plaice, gurnard, wrasse etc

if your prepared to travel theres lots of places to fish and species to look for.

new season starts at beadnell,sehouses,newton,eyemouth,st abbs from may onwards for red cod,pollock,coalies,wrasse,fish when sea flat on warm sunny days or nights. davy.

Chucking practice mate for coalies and dabs then the plaice arrive around mayish i think, but you can still get the odd coddy if yer lucky.

Love my summer fishing. May be a hangover from 20 years living in Hampshire where the best of the fishing was from March to November but I enjoy fishing in my shorts and polo shirt just as much as wrapping up in the floatie.

Depending on conditions I'll start targetting the Plaice from early April, Flounder and Eels in the rivers as said; Pollock and Wrasse off the rocks as well as the red cod while Bass are becoming more established every year on the NE coast...

Then there is the travelling. Up to Eyemouth or over to the Mull where the target is Huss and Pollock that is if you can get through the Woofers and a couple of trips to visit mates in Portsmouth and fit in some Black Bream and Smoothhound sessions.

Now if only the Smuts would hurry up with their northward migration, I wonder how many then would be "putting the gear away" until October...
