Penn 525 or slosh 20
worth spending abit for decent kit the 525 mag are very nice, best casting reel I have used. I have uses the gs and its not far behind the mag.
You can pick the gs 525 for about £70 same for the older model slosh 20.
Depends on your budget for a rod the ron thomson axcellerator 13.6 is an excellent rod for the money.
Cono-flex Nemesis Plus SLR14 14ft if moneys no object.

have tyo agree with nigels there the 525 mag is a class reel and pretty damn tough as well
personally i love the greys impulse class rod and will blast a bait out good bite detection and can easily handle the strong tides sea's and winds we get up her
however the sandstorm is a realy nice rod under a £100 quid i think you can get em for about £80 now

with limited experience, I can't recommend it over anything else, but since it's already mentioned.... I got a RT Axcellerator 2nd hand with an Okuma f/s reel for £80 (I don't 'do' multipliers!!), and to me it's a cracking bit of kit.
I can't cast for toffee, but I can manage over 100 yds easily. It feels stiff to cast, but I could clearly see bites from 10oz dabs in about 20mph winds and a decent tidal flow last time I was out.
You could go the whole hog and spend a wedge big enough to choke a donkey, but I reckon if you're willing to spend that much money, you should buy a boat!!

Good advice.
Buy some cheapish gear and see if you are going to stick with it then upgrade as and when you can and you know what you want.
You might as well find out what type of fishing you do most of and buy the gear to fit.

Spend £100 on the rod and buy 2 reels as you can't fish if you've lost all you're line.
Sloshes are probably best to learn with and are bombproof! Penn 525s are great if tuned correctly but can be a complete pain when the mags pop out or they are running too fast.
I would suggest RT Axcellerator 13ft6 (£100)
a slosh 20 and 30 with 20 and 30lb line.(£69 x2)
Im sure a dealer would probably throw in a shakespere beta box for a straight £250

Second hand is worth thinking about (not a second hand, although that would be handy, or should that be third hand!) but unfortunetly middle of the season is not the best time to buy though. A lot of lads on here have far too much gear and I'm sure you could get an invite out to test a range of rods and get some advice as well. Unfortunately I can't help personally as I live in outer space during the winter and near Barmston during the week
try a slosh20 or 30 i think they are spot onHave not been sea fishing for a while, so its time for a new rod and reel.
Will probaly be fishing in and around sunderland area. the rat house off the pier etc.
Any help with choosing new rod and reel please

as someone who does spend a lot of money on rods i consider myself to know a little, you dont need expensive gear to catch fish decent rod and reel 140shish then you can spend leftovers on good warm clothing ,boots etc ,reel i strongly recommend is the penn 525gs non magnetic this is just my opion but recommended

Just picking up from John.
Generally speaking we can advice people on what Rod and Reel to buy but decent Line,Shockleader and rigs are a must and not forgetting the comforts that John mentions ie decent winter clothing and footwear and a good quality headlamp.
If you are serious about fishing buy quality gear and you will only have to buy it once !

i agree with the others here you need some warm clothing and foot wear first (iff you dont already have some) and a head lamp .
then decide what you have left to spend on a rod and reel
any rod and reel will catch fish but the more you spend the longer life and quality you will get
