What species of fish is this ??

It's definitely a weever, I remember us catching a few when I used to fish the beaches with my Dad and Brothers.

I've not seen any since about 1979/80 ish;) more or less when I stopped fishing.

How long was it?

I thought they were supposed to be no more than about 4 inches long, at least if it is a lesser weever anyway:confused:

Ah it does look a bit bigger in the picture, must have been a small hook as well I guess?:)

You need to watch the gill spines as well as the black fin.

I'm sure I saw a sign on Coldingham beach warning of the danger of stepping on them, last summer.

Might have been another beach mind you.

lesser weaver

lesser weaver

Lesser weaver, you don't get greater weavers on our coastline.

I thought it was the lesser weaver with the yellow, and black, dorsal fin.
Can be very nasty, my father got stung many years ago, fishing off the east pier @ Scarborough his hand was twice the size by the time we got him to hospital. simple treatment though. There are several people stung in the south bay every year, little buggers bury themselves in the sand with just their head and dorsal fins,(spikes), showing. Sometimes very close to the beach where kids paddle !

mel....:o
