what strenth mainline for rigs

any advice on mainline strenth when tying your own rigs ,if you use the 10lb for every oz of lead on the shock leader then use same for the rig mainline surley the knots on the swivel & lead link will weaken the line stenth . yet some articles say its ok going 60lb / 60 lb . it it best to go 60lb shock & 80lb main on the rig ???? or does anybody use both and is it ok

i personally use memorex 60 rig body...... but for rockey situations sometime rotten bottems (granny knots under the snood for me).... as for weakening it with knots thats true but do say your knots are 70% the strength of the line thats still 42lb breaking strength.... your shock would be 60lb i'm guessing with 15-20lb mainline.... mainline's gonna get it before your rig body mate...

I always use 50lb shock leeder and the same rig body iv used this way for years with no problems.I wouldnt recomend puting any notts in you main rig body as this will weeken it alot use a crimp instead mate

As for the 1oz to every 10lb i dont think thats very acurate as i thump a 6oz lead of the rocks with 40lb straight through and iv never had my line brake yet just my expereance

You get a better cast with a shock leader and a thinner diameter line...for the rocks 30lb straight through will do you as you're only ever going to lob it - although if you can get a low diameter, higher lb'age then all the better...although not a cheap option

The 10lb for every oz is a good rule of thumb - your knot on the rig needs to be a good one tho if it's to stand up to the cast...5 turn Uni-Knot is what I use for virtually all my fishing

If you're not sure about the rigs add 10lb breaking strain and tie a good knot

Having tried a few variations I've settled on 80lb for rig bodies & 60lb shockleader coupled with 30lb Trilene (for rough ground). I think the thicker line copes a lot better with any abrasion - those supposed high breaking strain/low diameter lines are a disaster on the rocks, snapping at the slightest excuse. Not only does the leader cope better with the rocks but it also gives you the option of casting hard should you need to - when I tried 30lb without a leader it had a nasty habit of cracking off at the link knot at anything above about 60% power. I also find it reassuring when the leader's on the reel if the fish is wallowing in heavy kelp, or if any kind of lifting is involved.:thumbup:

I stick with the same leader/rig combo for lighter work, simply dropping the mainline down to 15 or 20lb, on smaller reels.

If your a power caster you should use at least 80lb or at least .75mm for rig bodies. There are plenty out there, suffix,penn,ultima etc.

I have had a few breakages on that too so please be extra careful if casting around others, check your knots and line for nicks and retie if necessary.

In no way is 50lb shocker strong enough for casting with any force with a 6oz lead and bait.

You will get away with a lob but not much more.

Certainly dont try pendulum casting with a 50lb leader on a powerful rod!
