With cod starting to move in to deeper water and becoming harder to find / catch! What other species are out there on the north east coast, not bothered about size it's just getting out there for a few hours and the info might help me as I've entered the species hunt this year :-)

I'm based in Cullercoats and at the moment can't travel to far as my wife has just had a hip replacement.

Many thanks in advance

you cant fish Tynemouth pier in daylight hours unless you belong to one of the clubs who have permission to fish at w/ends, only way is to fish at night when peir is locked. davy.

Or you could join the tynemouth club and get to fish it and learn a hell of a lot from the experienced anglers in the club.

I have never agreed with, or understood how Tynemouth pier is closed to Anglers who are not members of Tynemouth Angling Club ? There are those of us who dont want to, or through circumstances, cannot join Angling clubs and are being penalised because of it. Not right in my opinion.

Cheers Anyway,

AA.

there is also longbenton,s.m.a.c. and byker ousburn, who also share the pier, not exclusive to Tynemouth, every member is insured before they can fish pier by club who pay a hefty premium for the privilege and are governed by strict port of tyne rules. davy.

Points taken on board David but like I say, not everyone is able to join a club due to various personal circumstances. I would love to join my local club and fish the matches but my job entails working shifts which means that I cannot commit to fishing any matches unless I am off work at the time. I would have loved to have fished the Amble open this year but wasnt able to do so as I had to work that day. There are other people who just dont want to join the clubs and prefer to fish on there own. At the end of the day, anyone can fish South Shields Pier without having to be a club member.

Cheers,

AA.

It only costs £10 a year to join longbenton club , you don't have to make any commitment to fish a certain number of comps, you could fish one a year if you want . If your the type of angler that likes to fish on their own you don't need to pick a peg and fish the free zone with nobody around you . I also work shifts and thus miss many matches but still manage to get to a few and always enjoy the craic when I do

fresh water lakes /rivers and some reserviors have been taken over by clubs you can not fish them unless you are a club member.:(
the waters I fish used to allow day tickets for anyone wishing to go out for a days fishing that has now been stoped members only.
it is a pity you can not fish Tynemouth pier through the day.
seaham pier is the same members only, but there is a small area none members can fish next to the new car park. :)
remember years ago I used to have to climb over or around the gates to fish roker pier after darkness.
then again its all heath and safety now , insurance cover rules and regulations these days.

Good point AA.

Why is Shields Pier open to the general public but not Tynemouth Pier given that both protect the Tyne estuary?

Its because the port of tyne own the whole of tynemouth pier which I believe was built first, they ran out of funds halfway through the building of ssp so they turned to south tyneside council to fund the rest of the pier. They did this on the understanding that fishermen could use the pier aswell, the South side lads are lucky because if they had enough money they would have to be a member of a club to fish the pier aswell! !! . I know this as I was speaking to the tynemouth pier guard last summer while waiting to get on for pollock ;-);-)

totally agree longbenton have maches on thurs, sat, sun, and a pleasure match on wed once fortnight, same as Tynemouth who have matches on sundays once afortnight pier or roving, they also have a r/m league fished between Monday to Friday on pier once a fortnight and weekly in the summer. davy.

come and join any of the clubs for twenty pence a week and fish as many or little matches as you wish, with plaice and Pollock fishing in the summer a bonus. davy.
