Where to start!

hi guys, I normally spend my days off sea fishing but im interested in trying fly freshwater fishing instead. Where do I even begin when looking for a basic set up (which isnt crap!) of reel, rod and line, as well as flies and all the different permits you need, like day tickets, rod lisence, permits etc...! I want to give it a go but i dont know where to start with it all! Cheers for any help.

I had a go at the weekend mate, got myself a 1 day rod licence on the post office web site, £3.75 popped down to fox ponds, £9.00 for a day ticked and the guy will lend you a rod and show you the basics. It's not a bad way to do it before you go spending a load of money.

you wont go far wrong with the greys fly rods and reels the grxi rod and reels will serve you well have a look on ebay for some fly selections and this time of year a Dawson's olive , cats whisker or any colour fritz lure will put fish on the bank fish them deep and slow oh and get at least a couple casting lesssons nwl do a try it day and starter packages which include the price of the day ticket which are really good value for money

Arran where are you from mate, maybe someone close to you could help you with regards to fly casting, and maybe some flies

just bedlington mate, so plenty marks around me to try out

get up kielder mate, close for you. try the north bank off the slipway or along that bank, thats one of the spots they stock em they wont have moved too far with it being the start of the season. black and green fritz tends to be my go-to fly up there early or late season but most fritz work. dont worry about distance either most my fish there are taken within 1-3 rod lengths out there. not much natural food in the peaty water so they are after out off the trees. hope this helps

can you get day permits/tickets on arrival at fontburn/kielder? or do you have to book online? might head over on Thursday, ill sort out my rod liscence at the post office, will I need any other kind of permits?

as far as I know you just get it on the day, although its a pain because you have to get it at the visitor centre on the south shore, which only opens at 8am! just the day ticket and your rod licence and your fishin mate. keep an eye out for the wind forcast tho, such a big water it can be very uncomfortable if its howling. always shelter somewhere tho plenty bays
