Headed out lastnight to fish whitehouse sands, off to a very slow start, sea was flat, managed only 1 codling for about 1.5lb which I returned alive, fished here from 7pm - 10pm, very little action, another lad who was fishing had a codling for 2lb & lost a good one !
So I headed south to try a place I dont often fish, got set up for about midnight ! 2nd chuck nice bass for 2.5lb, then a coalie ! then a codling about the same size as the one I returned up at white house sands also returned alive, then another bass for just under 2.5lb, by this time the clocks had gone back, my phone said 3.15- the watch said 4.15, time to pack up & head home, all in all a slow night, but the persistance paid of, may go for a chuck for a couple of hours tonight, local, it wont be a late one as im off to the west coast in the morn on a mission - will be back with blacks !!
My tea is sorted !

Are they as small as they seem in the photo? Not knocking your angling but they look less than 35cm.

The MAF legal landing size for landing Bass is 36cms. Any fish over this size you are perfectly entitled to do what you want with it : release it, or eat it you aren't breaking any laws.
However, I am sure that most competitions DO have a higher size limit of (40cms ?) for weighing in this species.

40cm is just my choice, as I like to return as many as possible, even though I could keep many that I return, each to there own.

Toally agree with your comments. Like I said as long as the fish is over 36cms, the choice of keeping it or putting it back is entirely your choice.
The two fish you caught are beauties, and personally I would have no guilt at all in eating them.
