After itching to get out all week, I decided to wait until Sunday as the forecast looked better - and what a day it was. Me Graham and pPete got out at 8.30 to a perfectly flat still sea...
We hit the first wreck along with another boat, I had one codling while the other boat pulled in a few decent looking fish...
After about 30 min I decided to head to a couple of new wrecks which I had just got the co-ords for and was desperate to try. Got to the first one and hit fish straight away...
After Graham got down to dehooking his fish I honestly thought the trip was over as I heard a whale and found that two of the three treble hooks that Graham had got his fish on were literally a millimeter from being barb deep in his finger and thumb - luckily they weren't so we carried on fishing.
We plugged on taking a few fish then I made a call to try another new wreck. We got there and met the Upholder who seemed to be taking a few fish. We started fishing and straight away I was into a good fish - then it was off - gutted! the same thing then happened twice in a row! I was ready to throw my rod in with frustration! Slack water came and the fishing went dead - well for me and Pete any way, Graham seemed to be pulling fish in non stop!
Even though the fishing was slow Pete managed a small Gurnard which was a nice suprise..
We tried a few other wrecks with not much action - well except for the second shock of the day when Graham nearly lost his finger as he got a fast hold, tried to grip his reel and as the spool slipped his level wind jammed his finger between the level wind and his spool - it was a bit of a panic as I didn't know how to get his finger out of the reel - I went forr the tool box to unscrew his side plate of the reel, then not being able to stand the pain any longer graham decided to just pull it out and hope his finger came with it - luckily it did so we stayed out. A bit shaken and in pain Graham soldiered on.
After loosing 3 good fish on the previous wreck I decided to go back to it. with the tide now flowing I was convinced something would bite - and how right I was!!!
I loaded a long trace with mackerel and let it hit the bottom, about a minute went by, then a small bite and bang - fish on! I got it off the bottom and started winding, I knew it was a good one, then a couple of minutes later, it broke the surface...and what I've been waiting for for 20 years finally came - my first double figure cod....
weighing in at 13lbs I was (and still am) over the moon!! to make it even more satisfying I got it on my new rod I won last week in the Bob White comp!!
So we got back in around 7.30, all with big smiles- especially me...
a cracking day - can't wait to get out again...tight lines
