looking at the weather forecasts it looks like the sea will be about 9ft on sunday so i'm thinking will the newbiggin open be called off for safety reasons. what do you think.

Not looking too promising XCWeather - Forecast for Newbiggen

Horrible situation for the committee, whatever they decide some people will be unhappy but at the end of the day safety has to be the number one priority. Problem is you can't call it too soon just in case the weather changes, the wind drops and the conditions are perfect - it is a fine line between spot-on and unfishable.

I doubt it mate. Theres loads of places u could fish safely...

It's nothing like souh of the Tyne where I wave(let) spoils all the fishing....

Just be sensible.

Fair comment but if 300 anglers turn out will there be enough safe marks for them all to fish? What about those people who chance their arm and fish an unsafe mark? Looking at the forecast the seas are going to be massive, I don't know the area well and am happy to be proved wrong but I do worry about peoples safety in the likely conditions.

just remember safety first after all is fishing a comp really worth a life look at all those poor incidents last season too much to be lost in my mind

I looked at the xc weather link - what info on there points to a big sea? Im just starting out and havent quite put 2 and 2 together yet.

Any strong winds from a Northerly, Northeasterly, Easterly or south easterly direction will lift the sea. Also heavy seas North, South and offshore from us can generate large swells that affect our coastline.

This site gives predictions on wave height:

Look at the wind strength and direction mate. Starting tomorrow we've got 20mph plus northerly winds; these will whip the sea up and then the winds are staying strong through Saturday and Sunday. Anytime the wind is off the sea (i.e NNW through to S) it will roughen the sea up, the stronger the winds the bigger the sea.

As a general rule best times to fish are as the sea is dieing off after a blow so Monday night should be perfect (and I'm working  ) Though as cod cod cod says there are marks you can fish in a big sea, but you need to know where they are and be very confident in what you are doing.

i will give you a qucik weather report for today, im in the middle of the north sea offshore.
its as flat as a japs face out here at the moment.
no wind, foggy and not even a swell.

things can change in 30mins mind you lol

they wont commit to calling off a comp until the very last minute, it has happened a few times in the past, but not very often.

as a rough guide, the swell sizes etc from online weather reports are based from info offshore, the swell wont be that big inshore.

we get weather reports from various locations in the north sea, norway, greenland and iceland, i log into the system and watch a boring as fook bloke talk for 10mins everymorning and night for the weather forecast, he sits in a weather station somewhere in norway for shell, gives you a prediction of wind direct, speed, swell size etc.
just a shame a cant get that when im at home, gives you a heads up on the sea states etc.

just checked it now and it dosnt mention any change tonight.

hard one to call for this weekend it can go either way as prvious said a fine line.

cant be easy for organisers/ people traveling /ordering bait/also as previously said safety paramount.

Can you report back this time tomorrow? XC has winds picking up from light variable now to F7 - F8 northelies in the north sea overnight. Be interesting to see if they are right.

it was bad out here a few days back, 9m swells, rain from all directions and windy as fook. strange place to be, it can change so quick, so dont take what i say as gospel, more of a 'heads up' its coming your way lol

quite scary tonight, nee wind, flat and foggy, that film the 'fog' with the ghost pirates is starting to play in my mind :O

im off to lock the doors ;D
