From what I read on here people are waiting for a north west wind to stir the sea up a bit. Does this mean wind blowing from the north west or blowing to the north west?

anything blowing from the north to a southeasterly will get the sea away mate. meaning coming from the north, north east and so on. hope this helps :)

i think a north westerly will do nothing to lift the sea,we need a anything but westerly(blowing out to sea),good blow straight north or south is what we need, even better a low pressure to naturally lift the sea,no westerly even 50mph will flatten it

A good North Westerly wind will lift the sea!

depending on what part of coast you are fishing, doesnt lift it at shields, ive fished it many times, maybes the north pier shelters us from it,south westerly does nowt either

Not wanting to sound like a knowall, the next time we get a good strong North Westerly take another look down at Shields and i think you will find the sea running along the pier on the inside of the harbour.
Many a good fish caught on a North westerly sea.

:(i just wish the next 6 months were over, all the shore lads having had their best season for 20 years, and april1st 2012 was bringing light westerly winds for the next 6 months:)

its not much to ask:exclam:

The reason why a northwesterly confuses people is because on our part of the coast it still feels partly like its an off shore wind, however its what happenings further north and out to sea that matter. The wind generates a swell and this in turn arrives at our shore in the form of nice rolling waves :D

Spot on!

Davey M is bang on with this, any North westerley gales around Scotland tends to put a swell down the north sea coast, the stronger the gale and the longer it lasts determines how big the swell gets, it usually creates them big rolling swells that can sometimes become a nightmare to fish, as with any sea running it can be a question of getting out just at the right time as it drops away, too soon and unfishable, too late and you 'should of been here yesterday' comes to mind!!

if theres more northerly in than westerly,it will lift sea,but south side of shields pier along rock marks to marsden beach,a northwesterly barely budges sea, fair enough harbour side of pier, thats just the bit thats swung rund the north pier,i do lobster pots, and north westerly is what i was lookin for to be able to reach them on rock edges,if there was any sea on i couldnt reach them,or would have had to take pots out before hand

what im saying is the marks i fish, marsden, camelsy, are all sheltered from a north westerly, and does nothing to sea, shields beach is same, north pier takes the brunt of it,i dont know how further north reacts to it

a big depression is a different matter, doesnt matter if its north of norway,we will still get the swells, but wind on its own wont lift it(nw)

Mooseboy, i beg to differ.

Camels will and does produce fish on a north westerly as does marsden beach.

It probably does so because the sea swell is very fishable, but the fact remains a north westerly wind will lift the sea along the marks you have mentioned.

I agree with on the south side of the pier, oine of the places i have dived have been south of the pier which will give cover on a north westerly hence the sea will be flat on the most north part of the big beach, however the south end of the beach will have surf.

dead right davey lad its what happens out at sea but ur still a crap fisherman and a reet tackle tart hope you and the 2 girls are alright what happened to going up the coast drawn to the pier once again.

i think myself a straight west will put a bit of a swell on but south west not.

when i mean west realy a west to nwest wind if you know what i mean.
