Windows 7

windows

quite a few of my mates well into computers swear by windows 7(smoother faster they say but could be talkin rubbish as well the bottom line i have been no help at all

what do you mean by "classic stuff" mate?

Every Windows i have had i use classic menu's etc, easier to use & a lot faster. The start menu has everything in, my computer on the desktop etc. You could use the same settings in every version of Windows until now. There is a tweak to do it but don't touch it.

I did computer work for a living & will again when i move to Canada but i have not once recommended Windows 7 to anybody. It lasted 2 hours on my machine, it is supposed to be a "fixed" Vista but it isn't as user friendly as Vista & as for speed, boots up a little quicker & thats about it.

Tony, Yvonne has just told me that, if someone sends her anything at work on Window's 7, she can't open it, she's on XP.

Jim.

Jim, tell Yvonne to go to Microsoft website and download a file coverter pack. This will open files between Xp, Vista and 7. Its a free download.

I tell ya man, ubuntu.

if you really can't shake off the windows addiction install em both

you can run Ubuntu inside windows or alongside windows

if you want a netbook for doing 'internet' stuff Ubuntu will do everything you want to do, its linux, its many times faster, with zero viruses & zero spyware, looks and feels right, is intuitive enough that anyone thats never used any flavour of 'nix at all can turn it one and be doing stuff instantly

Seems OK...I'm now working off one of these at home

dot sr UK/024 | Packard Bell

it's Windows 7 Starter so I don't know if there's a marked difference between that and the full package - I'm sure someone better qualified than me can comment

Starter edition is basically a lite version with limitations. Depending on what you use it for a lot of people will find it good, where others like myself don't. For mainly surfing the net it will be perfect for you.

versions are: (ultimate being the best)

starter
home
professional
ultimate

Surfing Net, basic word processing and basic spreadsheets - everything I need it to do

The netbook's also got a monitor output for when my eyes try to implode due to the 10 inch screen

Thanks fo the info lads. Looking at 7 Home edition. Mainly for surfing the net, but need to work on a few Health & Safety presentations and other stuff as well.

i download link you put up before mark for linux works ok except for downloading software etc
do you have to fully install it before you can use software.
other thing is firewall there is a one for linux but why use if no viruses etc.
working along side by side ie duel booting is this difficult to set up .
i do actualy think linux is the way to go but its getting used to using different system and the tweaks.

you'd need to have it installed on something writeable, hard disk, memory stick or something to be able install extra software, installing stuff means you have to copy it onto the system disk and if you've booted from a cd its read only

dual booting is pretty easy if you boot a pc into windows and stuff the ubuntu cd in, it'll launch an installer asking if you want to install it along side windows and just do the dual boot thing for you without having to remove windows first. If you decide you don't like it you can remove it later and it gives the disk space it used back to windows

firewalls are more than just stopping viruses, they are there to stop people accessing or controlling your machine remotely, but linux is such a secure framework chances of anyone even trying are very very slim. with windows its a must
