Wor Lass 13th Sept – Not Bad For a Lazy Afternoon

During last week’s fishing exploits we found the wrecks devoid of fish and salvaged the day by picking up a few coddling from the rough ground. Learning from this, the plan was a simple one. Dig lugworm and have a lazy afternoon drifting over the hard ground until it as dark.
I dug enough worms for the three of us, only for the two crew to become unavailable, which worked out well in the end.
Setting off mid afternoon the plan looked less solid as the rough-stuff at Cullercoats was fishless. Time for plan B –steam up to St Mary’s and fish the shallow water, well inside of the yellow can.
First drop returned a small coddling and a steady stream followed ranging from 8oz to about 4 pounds. They were hammering the lugworm at times hitting the bait before it reached the bottom. I tried three times to get the camera out from the cabin, only to be interrupted by fish.

The current was just right for one long drift, right the way down to the south end of Whitley beach with fish most of the way, all coming from 30 ~ 40 feet of water. No secrets about where.

By the south end of the beach the fishing went quiet and the worm supply was used up. Time to head home with four fish in the box and easily ten times that returned, all coddling and one good sized ballan. Not bad for a lazy afternoon in September.

Early evening off Whitley beach.

Good report.......what no fishy pics.

I didn’t think it was a very interesting photo so left it out, but here you go…

I kept four of the first ten caught, after that all the others went back. But there’s five fish in the picture! The top one was one of the fish to come along when I went to grab the camera so he made it onto film before going back over the side.
