Wor Lass 5th May

Well, we went for it today with the first after-work session of the year. I left work at half past three, dragged a friend away from his decorating so by half past four we were motoring out between the piers at Tynemouth.
Turing left we headed for straight the yellow can that had been productive last week. The sea had a gentle swell and gave us a comfortable ride and calm evening’s fishing with a very slow drift. I don’t know where the fish have gone after the rougher sea last weekend, all we could find were tiny quarter-pounders, with a couple of keepers thrown in.
With only a few worms left and half an hour of daylight we set off to a wreck roughly in the right direction for our return back to the Tyne. On the first drop I picked up a scotchie which was shortly followed by a 5lb codling and that was all for the night. As we set off back to the marina a mist set in and darkness fell, travelling with the lights on for the first time. All the fish fell to lures baited with lug.

Nice one. :) I am absolutely itching to get out but the N / N/E winds are preventing me for the forseeable future, according to Met Office. :( Harrumph! Nice to hear people catching though!

Where abouts is this 'Yellow Can' I keep hearing about, if you don't mind my asking?

I have never had a good day up there but others do well, never had a fish over 5lb. It seems to be one of them marks that fishes like mad or nothing at all, no middle ground.

Nice catch anyway and your testing the boat out well :)

engine trouble

engine trouble

we went out for a couple of hours yesterday alternator packed up on us thanks to coast gaurd for towing us in had power pack with us i thought i had charged it up but i didnt check that was flat so a word of warning always double check its easy to get over excited when theres reports of fish getting caught managed couple of cod. Thanks to the boat that came over to us again to the RNLI thank you

My lad had a game at Whitley last night , I had a run down to the lighthouse about 6pm and saw the boats out around the can , saw the lifeboat towing a boat too , I guess it was you then GG ?
One good thing about fishing there , there are usually other boats in the area if you get into trouble , glad you got back ok.

its always nice to get out there and give it a go hopefully these north east winds will give us a break and we can all have a go

I went to the yellow can last week, just before the North winds came but yet again I found the whole area to be extensively gill netted. In previous seasons, the Whitley Bay "can" has produced better spring fishing than any other inshore ground but the gill netters have been operating all winter and it has certainly taken it's toll.
Gill netting in the North East is on the increase and whilst to date a moderate number of boat anglers have caught the odd fish, it is already apparent that the boat catches are well down on previous seasons. Furthermore, I'll bet folding money that the winter shore angling catches have been very poor and will not be getting any better in the near future.

I have net seen a net in that area in 14 years...you sure they are nets and not just pot strings?

Something I've been meaning to ask on here for a while Rich , how do you tell the difference? I've heard you say a wreck was boxed in with nets and when I've been out I've seen buoys near wrecks and wondered if they were nets or pots , how do you tell?

I can tell box nets and then when drove over then the fish finder confirms but a lot i think are just pot strings.

Hope i am right as i am taken the family up there rough ground fishing at the weekend and if they dont catch a cod to take home i have said i will buy them all one in the chippy.....thats 5x £4.90 in the local lol

Believe me, they are certainly gill nets, I have watched them being hauled on my last two "can" visits. Just check out the dans, they always shoot the nets on a line North/South whereas the inshore pot guy's tend to be more random with their pot lines.

i was of the impression nets would be across the tide ie east - west or does the tide eddy round there
