A don't know wether to keep it and take the level wind out and see it that will help speed it up or get a speed bullet or swap it thing is a wouldn't know what to swap for?
the anti-reverse bearing is the most likely culprit. either replace or clean out and re-oil! very simple engineering and once run-in almost bullet-proof.
2 year ago I sold my abu seven on ebay for 90 notes to a lad in s/land. I used the money to buy my saltist. I thought it was an ok reel me nowt specail but did the job. Thevlad tha bought it was over the moon. Carnt fault my saltist like pure awsome reel
Bought a G-Mag 7 last year, as new £40, absolutely no complaints about it at all for that money, cheap quick change spare spool as well, all lined up and ready to go.
I have just bought an Abu 7000 and loaded with 30 lb line all the way through. Perfect reel for heavy ground fishing.
My main reels are a Penn mag 525 and an Abu 6500. These have 18lb line on. I would,nt run back with the Abu they are a good reel and very strong. I have an old one i bought off e-bay years ago which looks like its been in a hard time with no paint left on but still works perfect.
up to you john to make the choice but in my opinion the greys is a good reel never had any bother at all with mine
i think it gets a really bad ride cause its not a BIG named reel so a lot of people
instantly think its rubbish but if they have used it and dont like it thats there opinion
stick with what you got as i dont think the lad at the tackle shop will give you another g-mag7 thinking about it now!
all the best john mate
I have one also, bought cheap from a mate who wasn't impressed, I removed the levelwind and seems ok, feels solid enough and decent build quality but haven't had anything decent on the end of it to brag it up more.
