Wrasse kill or Release

People could take photos of wrasse weeks ago and cheat and try to weigh them in that wouldn't work mate, what anglers catch wouldn't make no difference to the wrasse community what so ever even though there slow growing

Not if a photo catch card was handed out on the morning of the comp

Had tons over the years wrasse mainly Scotland my best was on the isle a Bute over 4lb bent 3lb tc curve rod double bigger teeth than ed the horse with Scotty and Davey the duck all fish released good times.

found a picture of one of your first David you're not to happy because you had scraped your elbow about 3yrs old up the mull

I've learnt a bit about the wrasse off this thread. Cheers lads.

And I'd release any wrasse I catch. Only had the one so far though.

if you don't like killing fish don't go fishing, wether you're pleasure or match fishing, fish are gonna die even when released
i'd bet half the people on this thread go out and target wrasse for sport intent on releasing them only for them to be deep hooked or have there arse blown out then whinge when the odd one gets taken in a match
I target Wrasse on balanced tackle and should they be deep hooked I just cut the hook length as close to the hook as possible,I enjoy fishing but dont enjoy killing any fish,as you say " the arse blown out " is usually the result of hauling a fish at high speed from the depths something that can be avoided unless time is at a premium, even fish suffering this fate stand a chance of survival, there is no reason why Wrasse cannot be removed from matches, you cannot weigh in rays bream, sea scorpions etc is there a difference?

Rays bream get washed up and sea scorpions can be caught in rocks pools with out rod, reel and line that's why there banned along with all other rock pool dwellers. As for winding in quick its not to save time but for you to get your gear and fish up above the kelp a method you need to use to get the best results.

Surely going to target the fish you want protecting is worse than the odd one being weighed in a comp. It's like saying ban whale hunting for commercial fisherman but let's go and catch them for fun?

Nicky as you know I was fishing matches in the 70's and am well aware of the reasons behind the rules, the fact that they are banned is the point, you could ban Wrasse in all matches on the ground of growth rate and yes they will still be caught but putting them back give more chance of survival than a ride out in a catch bag, anglers have to wise up and look after our sport along the same lines as Coarse anglers, times are changing and everyone should pull together.
at the end of the day to some winning is more important than fish welfare.

so why ask where there not allowed ?
We are looking after the sport by voting at every AGM by the anglers who are paying money to fish in matches what they want clubs put sizes up on other species like flounders, whiting along with wrasse but never good enough, we might as well stop match fishing all together and then tackle shops and bars that do weigh ins ect will lose out on a lot of business.

That's my last on the matter as long as the law states what can and cant be kept its up to the angler....

I think this post has run it course its evident that the Majority of anglers put back Wrasse, which is great new to anglers like myself who enjoy battling with the toothy critters,if nothing else the post may have been informative to some and in turn give respect to the species,If lads want to eat them fair enough its there right, but to catch a Wrasse that eventually ends up in a bin for whatever reason is Wrong ...

Nowt better to stir ****e how many fish get slautered every year and you worry about a few wrasse get a life
Ive got a decent life Garry ,and yes I do care about a few Wrasse,I also care about the slaughter but that should be in everyone's interest, but as in life some will speak out and try to change things were others couldn't care less.

You can't educate pork mate, like you say the majority do try to put them back but there is the one's who can only see £ signs and the status of being top dog when winning a match. And those who say don't fish if you don't like killing fish, I keep codling and yes sometimes it's hard to get a deep hooked fish back from time to time but there's nothing wrong with people trying !
