Our annual works boat trip is on the JFK next month, this will be my first "real" wrecking trip and am looking for some advice. Will my 20lb class ugly stick & Abu 7000 suffice?. If I use braid will I face the wrath of the rest of the mono lads. And what kind of weight should I expect to be using (it's a smallish tide) for either braid or mono.

Ugly Stik will be fine John, I use 10oz leads & pirks with mine.

Not sure about the ABU you might need summit a bit stronger.

You get a much better feel for the bottom with braid but if you get tangled it's much harder to sort the Joe Mangles out.

I have been wrecking with Alan for years, he knows his stuff. The rod should be okay but get 2 good sized fish on at the same time and your rod might struggle. I would try and get a bigger reel, use 12oz weight minimum and using braid means you will feel everything. If you plan on using jiggers and a treble hook, tie the treble on with line, because if you snag up which you will do, you will only lose your treble hook and not all the gear. Good luck and enter the sweep, it will pay for your day out.
 
I recon your abu 7000 will be fine. lol

Been using mine as my main reel on the boat for the last few years no problem.

I just set the clutch so if I get a two or three codling on together it slips a bit when they're tugging alot. Makes for a bit of fun, but still gets them up quick enough.
 
dont want to upset you cod father, but it just shows that the fish are getting smaller if you have no problem with a 7000 when wrecking. TLD15 is the smallest reel i would use.
 
Not had any monsters with it Alan but had plenty up to 10 lbs and quite a few trebles of 5-6 lbers. Its not a heavy duty wrecking reel but kept serviced and set the drag right, its been sweet for me the last few years.
I can only comment on my experience with it.
And ive put plenty pictures up in the past to prove.

Servicing/Repairing Okuma Reels

Alrite lads, out on the boat on wednesday and just found me reel is knackered. Its an Okuma Titus TG, was wondering if there was any good Okuma dealers or tackle dealers that can fix them pronto (ie not sending them to Okuma) The guy at ID Fishing is on holiday and Billys say that they have to send it off as they don't have Okuma parts.

Any help would be appreciated.
 
as I said codfather the average size of the fish is getting smaller, wouldnt like to hit a shoal of 15-20lb fish with a 7000, especially if you get two at a time. Obvioulsy now with the state of fishing you can go even lighter. Hope you are well prepared for that fish of a lifetime, that will take line off without thinking and strip your gears when you tighten the drag to stop it getting into the wreck.
 
Thanks lads, I think I'll put braid on my 7000 & borrow a bigger reel with mono. Trips on the 24th June so fingers crossed for some settled weather. I'll take the camera just in case!
 
two 15 lbers at once ........................ goodness Alan just what are you on? ;) :):D mind you I did have a dream similar to that once :)

(I know, it used to be that way ......... thats what me dad used to tell me as well :) :) )



Andyjames ........... new reel wanted I would think, then your existing one when repaired becomes the spare.

Me good old 7000 will be ready for the return of the tunny Alan LOL.
Thats it well jinxed now, probably fall apart next time out.
Remember me Dad telling me the lad fishing next to him had a 30lber and then his rod bent double, he thought he was gonna top his mates fish but ONLY got a double of 20 lb ers.
 
was begining to think the same thing meslf Norman! Daiwa sl 50 i think, Frasers said they'll look at the okuma tg, but i fear the worst. First trip of the season on wed so would be nice to have a new reel - come to think of it, that rods looking a bit shabby too :eek:

The bloke in Billys says i need a kickin for letting the okuma knacker after only a couple years. he's dead right an all :mad:
