WTF am I doing wrong??

What are you doing wrong? Your using a pulley rig mate, that's what your doing wrong. I'll bet your hook was coming in clean? That's because a small fish can clean your hook and not register a bite. Unless a fish hooks itself and moves the lead you are unlikely to see any bites at all. In fact a 20 punder could clean the hook of a pulley rig and you would know nowt about it. What is more a pulley rig is more prone to tangle up as your lead rolls about on the bottom. So the answer is ..... Stop using pulley rigs! Don't use pulley rigs! Never use a piggin' pulley rig!

Got to agree with the Doctor.

There's only one thing for it. Next time I'll use 2 rods, 1 with a pulley & the other with a flapper, see what happens!

To quote Sherlock Homes "Eliminate all other factors, and the one which remains must be the truth"

Would be interested to find out the results of your experiment.

Hook size has a much bigger effect on what and how much I catch than anything else I've found. Fish with 2/0s or 3/0s at the minute and most of what I'm catching is sized. Very few smaller fish. I'm happy with that though.... On my scratching rod I tend to use size 1 Aberdeenshire and catch everything. Often both with pully rigs!! Never had any issue with them tangling either.

fished the steetly jetty [rip] one night with my,mate lads fishing both sides of the pier we picked the south side every one was pulling up whiting and cod not me and my mate, one and a half hours later not a single knock between us and every body around us kept landing fish after fish we were using clipped down pennel rigs 2 0 top hook 3 0 bottom, blacks, rag and squid was the bait yet no fish, changed our position to the north side fish a cast, you tell me what i was doing wrong on the south side and not wrong on the north side same bait, same rig, same ground

That's fishing sometimes. You can be 6 feet one side or the other to a pool holding fish and never get a knock. Me, my cousin and uncle fished side by side one day, me and my cousin got 47 fish between us. My uncle sat in the middle had 2.
Its the way it goes..

Well I was on there last night and managed a couple of Whiting and a Flounder. Was using a simple paternster rig with 4/0 pennel hooks and lugworm for bait.

Had plenty of bites once the ebb kicked in but they will have been Whiting hitting the bait and running. If I'd switched to a 2 hook clipdown rig with 1/0 or smaller hooks I'm certain I'd have had plenty more fish.

There were a few other rods on the pier last night but I only saw two codling come in on the drum and heard of a couple off the hard ground around the 70 mark

Aye see wot today brings smallfry. If Geordies 'orrible piggin' pennel rig comes out on top then I think I'll start using them strite away marra ;-)

Geordie! Are you there? Were you the gadgey in the owld blue smock that I saw at the Sunderland Open weigh in?

I know they are. I'm only kiddin'. I'll never use them. For a single hook rig a running ledger is better (if the lead is stationary on the bottom, no tanglyuppies). But most of the time I use a simple simple single hook (size 6.0) paternoster / flapper styley rig with an 18" (500mm) trace when I'm codding. I have got a trick but it's not the way I tell 'em, it's the way I tie them Paddy ;O)
