Annual week at the MoG

Just spent a week at the mull (stopping at Sandhead) with the wife and kids and managed a few trips out.

First morning, I ventured out south of Sandhead with the plug to see what I could get. There wasn't a breath of wind......

Saw a few fish on the surface, and one massive swirl of a tail, but no takes.

Next trip was to one of my favourite marks south of Port Logan. Fishing the ebb, I was soon into mackeral on spun sandeel. Used one in strips and had 3 Pollack on the float to 4lb (sorry no pics - deleted them by mistake

) This is the view south. I've fished there and its a tw** of a hike...

My next trip was another bass session. Unfortunately, the breeze had got up in luce bay the previous day, so the inshore grounds were heavily coloured. I gave it an hour then gave up.

The flat rock area was the next venue the following morning (Thursday). Again, an ebbing tide with plenty of mackerel. I tried for Pollack with spun sandeel, floatfished mackerel and sandeel and never got one. What I did get on floatfished sandeel was this....

A baby conger! has anyone ever had one on the float??

One thing about this place is the amount of sh*** left behind by anglers, absolutely disgusting. By this time, the weather had taken a turn for the worst - the sunny MOG....

Friday was a family day, so never got out which was a shame as there wasn't a breath of wind - a gorgeous evening.....

When I woke up this morning, and looked out of the window I couldn't believe my eyes. Torrential rain with gale force winds, Luce bay was a mass of white horses.

All in all a great holiday though, I just can't get enough of the place.

Nice report Davy
we just came back yesterday as well, did'nt do alot of sea fishing just stuck to the fly, some of the marks i fancied when i had the time were out of bounds with the rain/wet,got a few i fancy trying as well, sea was very rough around Auchenlarie area when we left at Midday.Dont think we did too badly with the weather, only bad day was Wednesday,Thursday was actually ok where we were,a few of my mates were camping last week and they chucked the towel in and came home early. The family that own the farm where we stay said the weather has been bad  and they are used to it :D

You're right about the weather Alan, the week started off really good, the water in Luce bay being really clear. But as soon as we had that bit breeze, it really coloured up the water.

I had a few Pollack marks to try, but I needed dry conditions as the places are bad enough to get to when its dry, let alone when its wet.:o

Hello Davey,
Thanks for the photos, shame about the weather though, it's been a very poor summer and now the nights are cutting off! Ah well.
Regards Ian.

I checked a couple of marks out on Tuesday with the intention to fish them later in the week,it rained on Wednesday and Thursday so that put them on the back burner, they were'nt dangerous to fish from but it was a steep grassy walk down on paths/tracks i was'nt familular with, probably October when i get another chance to fish there

nice report

nice report

lovely pics and well done on the conger. It's a shame the mull seems to have gone off a bit over the past few years.

We've been fishing around the flat rock and the wall a few times a year for the last 4 or 5 years. We went for a couple of days in July and it was a little bit disappointing, no pollack at all and I only got one bite from a conger (lost on the lift) among the 6 (yes 6!) rods we had out for them. A few people there had caught little ones on ledgers but it seems all the big fella's that we go for have gone!

It's a shame everyone leaves so much cr@p around there, the place is an absolute tip. Even lazy sods like us burn our rubbish away to almost nothing so we leave little or no mess. It's just a shame the place seems to be full of spacker-chavs catching sacks of mackerel to waste. When we first went it seemed a different place. There was enough litter etc to see that it was frequently fished, but the range of species is like nothing I've seen since. We used to get plenty of good pollack, some big congers, some wrasse, plenty of LSD's and even a tope from the flat rock.

Here's hoping the fishing is a bit better when we go back up in a couple of weeks. (Some dry weather would help too!)

Totally agree, Burrowhead is now exactly the same. You've got to be prepared for a good walk/climb to reach decent marks, which now seem to be on the west coast of the mull. The mark I fish south of Port Logan gets very few, if any, anglers as you can tell by the seagull nests that you have to pass;):o

let me know next time your going, i would be up for a look!!

Lemmy dont just blame the Chavs/young'uns for the mess,I've said it before on here that i've seen well known local anglers leaving rubbish/mess in our area (NE).
I've fished the more common marks in the past but like Davy i prefer to find somewhere quiet/different to fish, although the last few times i've been over the weather/ground has'nt been that kind to us

Nice report and pics there Davy ,I love it around that area ,when the weather is good there aren't many places better to be in my oppinion .

Alan I must agree with you regarding well known anglers dumping rubbish wherever they fish ,ask the locals up there and it's always north east lads that seem to come up on top when it comes to blame !!
