just had a guy on the phone, he is an angler, he was down on beach beside Camels Island Sth Shields with his two dogs on New Years Eve, another angler had left his rod in a stand unaccompanied while he was off taking photos, two freshly baited hooks hanging there, one of his dogs swallowed one and the other grabbed the other you can imagine the chaos. He had to call emergency vet out and they operated straight away, he managed to get hook out the other himself. Unfortunately he wasn't insured, dog naturally is still not right.

Were the dogs off the lead?
It's a 2 way thing really, when I'm fishing on the beach I keep a close eye out for people with dogs &/or make sure the baited rigs aren't within dogreach, when I had a dog & went to the beach, if anyone was fishing I made sure the dog was on the lead. (it was a Lab so no chance of her coming back if she could smell fishy bait)
Hope the dogs are ok though.

Should of had the dogs on the lead when passing the angler. The amount of times I’ve had words with people about THEIR dogs pi**ing on my equipment or eating my bait or elastic etc is a joke. Dogs are the owners responsibility. Fair enough a rig with no one in sight or their gear, that’s bad craic.
Got Agree with the above,Like dogs but some the owners are ignorant and take no responsibility for their dogs running amock.Tynemouth Longsands in the dark I'm down to keeping bait and spare traces between casts zipped away in cool bag at all times,getting tired of chasing after dogs nicking my wraps.
Think you should take a bit extra care if leaving a mark or moving your gear around personally I have one last look before moving but even then it's easy to leave something and not realise it until it's to late, but when owners let their dogs go near anglers tackle while they're fishing that's the owners fault not the anglers, if this lad was an angler he should have known what to expect and not let his dogs go anywhere near this lads gear as said there's to sides to it. Don't think anyone fishing would leave baited rigs on purpose

In my Opinion being a dog walker and angler it’s ignorance on both sides non angler dog owners don’t realise there is baited hooks about and anglers that are around areas ie beaches were dogs are let off should place baited hooks in there tackle box not left hanging on rod stands and just left unattended but there is no excuse for discarded hooks left on beaches and cliff tops imo

No but you can train them not to go near anglers boxes, a lot just let them go up to someones gear and make no attempt to stop them

Quite agree, I've had one or two incidents but fortunately none have resulted in a hooked dog. When I was younger we had German Shepherds, they were trained not to take food from strangers or pick anything up (other than their ball or stick) when out for walks. Takes no more time really than training them to sit or lie down, but sadly these days the standards of dog owners seems to have gone seriously downhill. When you read of these incidents where sad morons are leaving poisoned "treats" lying around to be picked up by unsuspecting dogs, it really makes sense.

I fished a comp over Sunderland on NYE and saw one of the anglers to my left had left a fully baited pennel (cut above the hook, so it was a wilful discard) smack bang on the prom. Height of ignorance and irresponsibility.
This having been said, many dog walkers seem to enter a coma when they allow their dogs to inquire around anglers property. It really does come down to each being personally responsible and each aware how their actions impinge on others. Sadly a lost art these days.

Hi lads, wont be the first time ive had my box peed on especially on the mentioned beach at tynemouth and whitley being just as bad by people allowing there dogs to continually run around often at great speed in the dark, it is of my general opinion that the inconsiderate few dog owners who allow there animals to run riot all over the beach with little control over which anglers boxes or bait they plunder next should expect that there dogs are going to be at greater risk of eating baited hooks or rubbish as this is what dogs often do, however im all for having an element of resposibility on both parts, cheers korky.

I fish that area regularly and between the stone steps and camels island I counted 27 bags of disguarded dog dirt, all in the same type of bag, why pick it up and bag it then throw it down when no one is watching. As in all walks of life there are some people that give others a bad name.
I get sick of my box getting pi**ed on.tynemouth is really bad for it,i can only remember one person saying sorry and asking if I had anything they could use to wipe it off,most just walk away as if its nothing and a odd one has laughed as if its funny,i have dogs and they wouldn't think it funny if I let them p*ss on there car door.plus the dogs doing it are normally to far away from there owner to be stopped
that's exactly how it goes for me quite often u get a grin or a chuckle , (no harm really done ) a could.nt care less attitude most of the time and very rarely u get sorry that's why u see dogs on a beach a fair distance from the owner so they do not see their **** machine doing it out of the sight of them
its the owner who need training first before they allowed to have a dog and owners then have to take dog to get trained for basic commands like stay, stop, wait and come here and able to prove
it before being allowed in public with the dog
Waco, my ****Machines are well trained, and as a fellow angler, i alway's keep them well away from fishing gear, rod's boxes and the like.
Don't go tarring everyone with the same brush, or the dog walker's will do the same with angler's.
I,am also a dog owner and I take my dog down the beach most days, when I pass fishermen I always either pick my dog up or put her on a lead, there is good and bad on both sides, most dog owners don't know the danger, some simply don't care, yes I have had my box xxxxed on with the grins Waco mentioned, however fishing rubbish is left by some anglers and the same people who leave the cart wrappers, newspapers and dirty rags when there is bins nearby won't change, the argument could go on forever, as long as we do what is right by anglers and take our rubbish home or bin it, we won't get a bad name from dog walkers.
