BIG BAITS

Will post this again. Did a bit of a test a few weeks ago. Three different rigs. Scratching rig with size 1/0 hooks Distance rig with size 1 hooks and my usual pennel rig with 4/0 hooks. The 4/0 pennel hooks won easily. As Micky says it won\'t always work but my belief is use what you are confident with.

Jim.

I\'m confident with big lug, mussel & squid cocktails........pity the fish aren\'t so confident...lol

Will continue to stick with it, though...........One day.......one day......it\'ll pay off (well, that\'s what I keep tellin\' meself....lol)

I always use big baits in areas where the bait has to stay out a bit longer [kelp beds etc] the big bait gives off maximum scent and you do not have to drag it in every 2 mins and get snagged up

Mick, 2 things.
One, why did you use a 4/0? surely a big hook leads to less fish also (as per your previous argument)

Two, Silvers are key to your argument. I\'ve fished next to people using exactly the same size cod bait before EXCEPT they\'ve added a silver on the end and been hammered, and vice versa. Try it with a single lugworm on a 4/0 in a big sea or on the rock ends, and see how it works.

It all depends on conditions, nothing else. Heres a scenario for all of you....

You go down to your local pier, seas just dying down after 5 days of gale force northerlies, perfect roll on. You\'ve got runnidown, squid, and mussel for bait. How would you bait up.....

a) a single lugworm, or a small cocktail on a 4/0
b) A big cocktail of all three baits.

One thing you can\'t deny is big baits = big scent trail = more chance of any fish sniffing your bait out.

I\'m not a devout fan of either way of fishing, I\'ll change to whatever the conditions/ground in front of me dictate, but personally I love throwing a big cocktail bait into a lovely rolling sea waiting for that first slack liner!!

there is no doubting that your thinking is logical davy, i used to think exactly the same as you for a long time. the thing that made me rethink was when i started to fish two rods on most of my sessions, one fishing big baits on 4/0 or 5/0 vikings the other size 1s and small baits. there was no doubt over a period of time the small baits / hooks outfished the big baits / hooks by quite some way (for fish of ALL sizes). the only down side i found was if fishing a pier where there was a significant sea running or big lift i did loose a couple of nice fish on the lift.
time to experiment again, two rods side by side both with 4/0s on but big baits on one rod small baits on other. result similar number of bites on both rods but much better hookup ratio on small baits.
at least 90% of my fishing is done with smaller hooks but if i think theres a reasonable chance of a biggie i\'ll up the hook size but keep the baits to a reasonably small size.
fish the tactics that work for you though, i\'ve never been one to follow the masses, much prefer to do my own thing.

depends on the venue look at the size of this bait to the size of the fish it quite obviously proves that if it can eat it, it will have a good go at it, presentation is a major factor in bait sizes etc. i personally think that if it is done correctly hook points showing nicely then a hook up will not be problem when using big baits.....

i was talking about tactics davy not locations.
as i said earler right bait, right place, right time.
if you look back at the comp results from all those years ago (christ i feel old) you\'ll find it was coalies from the wash end of the south pier i did well with not so much the flounders out the river. and if you remember i used to catch the coalies on much lighter tackle than everyone else used (a light 8\' spinning rod with two size 4 aberdeens and a single mussel on both hooks.)
ah memories !!!!

Coalies on the Wash end...those were the days, as were coalies at the concrete posts on Roker!! Can\'t remember watching you with the spinning rod cos if you remember, you had to be 18 to fish the South, but you were a senior in Sunderland SAA at 16, so for 2 years, I couldn\'t fish where most of the winning weights were caught - What a fair committee we had then, probably my major reason in leaving.

Is it right that Sunderland SAA have been had to leave their HQ cos the council have increased the rates or something?

unfortunatly true davy, i haven\'t been a member for many years but from what i gather they put the ground rent up from £250 per annum to £1600. not certain of the exact figures but they are not to far away from the mark.
the club have handed the hq back to the council. i had always been led to believe sunderland saa actually owned the building, apparently not so.

digger if trying the blast the southern end of the blast has had some good fish on mussel baits erent touching rag lug etc but hammered mussel baits.

hi digger, what if the fish are not hungry ie they have been gorging themselves for a whole week during a northerly blow, fished seaham north pier a while back after a lenghly blow getting loads of bites but not hooking them i thought they were just messing about we all have said this .i remembered what an old timer said to me a put a smaller bait on and straightaway i started to get fish the fish themselves were full of runnydowns were they just too full?????????? regards john
