Blyth Pier - early morn 19/05

Decided to have a look down the pier this morning - haven't been on for a few months & I figured it was finally settled enough to have a go for plaice, having had a few from Shields pier a couple of weeks back. I got down about 5am to find only one lad on, wasting his time with the spinner, and first chuck managed a plaice of 29cm.

This was followed by small codlings, coalies & size plaice nearly every cast - by about 6am the other lad had obviously had enough & packed in, leaving me the pier to myself. As usual, things went dead over high water, then finally about half an hour into the ebb I got one worth digging out the camera for, measuring in at 40cm.

OK, not quite a bin-lid (more pedal-bin!) but things looking good for the morning again conditions-wise so think I'll be going back about 5.30am to try for the real lunker - really want one over 2lb this year! Every fish was taken on fresh crab except the big'un, which finally took the rag tipped with mackerel which had otherwise gone untouched the whole session.

Yes mate, it would have been except I realised I'd forgotten my fish-bag & no spare carrier bag - couldn't even find an old one lying about so all the fish were safely returned - took off like torpedoes!

Canny plaice, looks plump, and the markings are nice too.

Yeah, they're getting fatter, a few weeks ago they were still thin after spawning. A few more weeks & they should be nice & fat!

That's a cracking plaice.
I had my biggest ever plaice off Blyth pier as well, before the bend fishing into the river with crab. It was just over two and a quarter, I was smiling for days! It always seems the same they come on and then you can't get on the pier for people fishing for mackeral, that was why I was fishing before the bend.

Used to get some nice ones of Amble pier in the late 70's, last big plaice I had was about 1995 when a mate had a small boat - we drifted just off Cambois pier - rocks one minute throwing out some nice codling, then you felt the change to sand and some blinking big plaice, clean fish and the size had me in awe. But they're honestly not far out if it's still the case - which makes me wonder why we don't get them off the (west) pier to the mad sizes.

Well, went back this morning & it was total pish, only a couple of small poodlers & a solitary flounder. Think I'll leave it now till the next big tides, hope they'll be back, (nice "n" plump!) by then.

little coalies are all over, can be fun if you want to just get some fresh air - I'm using a string of daylites cut down to just 2 at a time, with a spinner on the end - harbour/pier down the side jigging has loads coming up. Just flatten the barbs so you can release them easily, my kids love it.

Very true Jim, especially on that blinkin' pier! Never put money on the result of a session on that place

I do want to get another couple of sessions before it fills up with spanner-chuckers though Sure there'll be a good one to be had.

nice plaice mate, probably only herd of a few possibly that size from shields pier. Am targeting plaice this year, i hope 4 a big'un!!
