Norm

well done mate, good to see some good fish caught off blyth pier, still seems hitty missy with the mackerel, crackin plaice might have to get down and try for one:) deff a successful day good pics aswell:D

good session, im back down there 5.00am in the morning to see if I can bag a few for bait ! long day tomorrow as im hitting the pier for high water , then lyneburn for the evening high water, just hope the weather is at it's best.

Just to let u know mate theres 8 there not 7

Yeah, I know - I got seven of them during the spinning session from about 4-5am when I ditched the bait rod (dropped off four or five more), went back to baits when they seemed to disappear for a while. That's when I got the plaice & a couple more flounders - decided not to waste any more crab on dabs so gave it double shots of rag & mackerel (only had enough worm thanks to finding a couple of bags worth in some newspaper that someone had left behind - thank you :D)

Other lads were still spinning and one or two started to show again around 7ish, so I thought I'd have another flick with the spinner as well - got another first chuck but that was it so I just concentrated mainly on the baits till I decided to pack in.

Gary :)

Just an afterthought, but I've been chatting with Alan over the identity of the smaller fish in the first picture of the double shot - Dab or Flounder?

When I caught it, by the light of my feeble little LED headlamp, it never entered my mind that it was anything other than a dab, but I must admit I did a double take after uploading the photo - I thought "that looks like a flounder". So I've been into photoshop and blown it up a bit for comparison - what do you think?

My money's still on a dab (looking at the "D for Dab" shape to the lateral line - unfortunately I can't be 100% sure but I think it also had that tail-to-head roughness that you get on a dab. Like I say, at the time it never occurred to me in the gloom, but looking at the photo the colour (and shape) looks very "flounder".

Gary

Got most of the flounders & dabs during darkness throwing about 2/3rds of the way across directly towards the lighthouse - from your shot I reckon a lob of about 60 yards towards me on the west pier would have had you into the fish. I got the plaice later (about 6.15) along with a couple more flounders throwing out about 130 yards towards the mile marker.

I might have another look friday morning - just depends on the weather which at the moment looks a bit iffy; it needs to be good & glassy like this morning to get the plaice. Once it gets into mackerel season proper, I'll be breaking out the float and fishing back down the pier before the bend - it just gets too loony fishing on the end:D

Cheers, Gary :)

PS the mackerel were all caught close in (no more than 20 or 30 yards out) and were quite deep. Don't make the chav mistake of thinking you need to welly out your spinner as far as you can - more often than not the fish'll be almost at your feet.
BTW, all the flounders & plaice were caught on rag tipped with a scrap of mackerel, all the dabs took fresh crab.

Aye gary i was casting everywhere and not a bite at all.. but did not try cast near the blyth pier as too many boats were coming in but did try the channel a lot of the time but nowt so i tryed the shallow rocks n lost all me gear grr **** happens.. only 3rigs 2sets of feathers & a spinner plus i heard you cast near me lol canny casts you were doing btw. And would you believe it i was also using rag and mac tipped off on a size 2/0 hook.. was catchin macs next to lighthouse 30yards out... coalies were caught around the back of the lighthouse in the sun light area:D and i didn't take any pics of the sunrise as i have a **** phone atm.. going to try next week if the weather picks up, give blyth a shot or 2:rolleyes:

Might be worth trying a smaller hook - especially when targeting the flatties. These are the ones I like; Kamasan crab hooks, I was using size 1's though I often use 2's & 4's in matches.

Aberdeens are also pretty good, I like the Kamasan match ones but the short-shanks are also very good & much stronger - I'll use these if there's the chance of a better fish turning up.

Cheers, Gary :)
