Mike Curtis, an island fisherman, has seen his first Mackerel of the year about 200 yards off the Isle of Wight waters.Being a man who know his fish, Mark says this is about three months earlier that you would normally expect. Mackerel have in recent years been caught off Sandown Pier in early April, even so this is certainly an early fish. We've heard that Mackerel are caught in late Winter off Chesil beach.

Nope worse.

Tracksuit's with what most would class as leathal weapons (6oz weight with 2 strings of feather) £20quid rods that cast up rather than out.

I once went over to kill a mack that they just threw on the side cause after hitting it repeatedly they couldn't kill it..... I was disgusted but at the time thought I'll show them how to... doubt they took any pointers like

URGHH guess South Shields pier will be a no go this year then with that bloody paper shop along Ocean Rd now selling rods, reels, tackle etc. It will have to be 6am to 10am sessions if it's to be at the pier, hopefully they will be in bed sleeping off the hangovers of the cheap alcohol is it white lightening lol.

the only time i go to shields pier in the summer is at first light till about 9am before the numptys arrive.

Nice pier Sandown, watched some cracking bass swimming around it last year...never seen any mackerel caught thou, never seemed the right spot for mackerel but starnger thing shave happened like laods of mackerel off Blyth pier in Feb...or is it April the 1st..give over :)

Coalie all the way or at worst herring sprat that turn up mid March from Shields pier.

it might be to early 4 the mackeral and u might laugh at seeing someone spinning at this time ov year but if the colies are there and the sea is flat why not if there catching them wont be long b4 the pollock are here in anunbundance

iT wont be long till my spinning gear is out, started on the 24th of April last year and was getting plenty goalie. The sea temp is already a degree warmer than last year at this time.

ye gods, why is every one going on about mackerel [wheather there are a a few about or not wich i doubt ] it's the winter cod season ,is the fishing so bad that in early march we are talking about mackerel and the lunatic chavs that go with it, i find reading the posts over the years that winging about these idiots is like a stuck record same thing every year, can we at least talk about the cod fishing or as it is at the moment the lack of it,the cod are the main spieces that we target, not summer mackerel[although coaught on light spinning gear or float,it's a noble little fighting fish, pound for pound as good as any thing you can catch off our coast] but i digress, it's the winter season let's talk about winter fishing. please .

was on blyth pier with my boy on saturday alan. Loads of coalies and rockling. No sign of mackerel mate and there were about 10 rods out at one point.

apparently a lad was in ID Fishing and bought a load of spinners to go fishing at Blyth Pier where he says he has been getting quite a few mackerel, anybody heard anything. Have a feeling they could be coalfish and he can't tell the difference.

was there saturday with my boy and little bro alan. No sign of mackerel but plenty of coalies and rockling about mate so yeah think the lad might be gettin a bit mixed up mate.

just reading this months sea angler about the boat trip off hartlepool and them were hitting boat loads of mackerel few miles out.think they will be here earlier than last year.whilst on the conversation of chavs maccy bashing thats why i bought a yak to get as far away as poss from them.avoid the pier like the plague in summer:D

unfortunatley i have to endure the chavs as i take my boys on the piers as i find it a bit safer for them. Its good fun for them but gonna try an get there early hrs or late on this year tho to TRY an avoid em lol

thing with articles in mags you don't know what time of year they where taken, unless they state the month. i have written a few, done them in the summer and they come out in the mags in the winter.
