Canny shop

Hello,
I would like to add my comments to this thread, these are only my observations and experiences of the two shops mentioned in this thread.

I think Andy Rutherford has an excellent shop with a great selection of tackle, I also find him to be a real nice bloke and I've seen him give advice and time to anglers on more than one occassion.

I sometimes go into Reelsports shop and again I have only had good experiences of this shop. I find Terry to be helpfull and friendly and he has given me some good advice whenever I've asked. I was in just a week or so ago and despite having not been in for several months I was, as always, made very welcome.

Good tackle shops are more than just shops, they are also meeting places and somewhere to catch up on the craic and as such there will always be the same familiar faces in them. I understand that some anglers may not be comfortable with this but on the plus side this is a great way to pick up tips and info.

Tackle dealers, like many other buisinesses, are also suffering from the economic climate and the competition from cheaper on-line deals. I always try and buy from my local ones.........I find that by doing this they also look after me.

This is only my opinion so please guys go easy on me!!

Regards Ian

my vision of the best tackle shop would be any of talked about here, but with a small room off the side/back where you could have a cup of coffee and a bacon butty and listen to all the fishing craic, my dream tackle shop would also have fresh mackerel in the pan all day long.

would also like to say i have to agree with above post also well said.

no mate he keeps it for his mates and makes sure they have what they need, before he will sell to you hes a funny bloke and alot of would agree.hes had alot of dissatisfied customers.me like alot of others would rather travel to rutherfords than spend my money in his shop.[/QUOT
have to agree with this went in for some lug good few years back and he said he was keeping it in case his locals wanted some (IN CASE) never been back since very bad business ethics in my eyes...

well i dont blame him for making sure his locals get their bait first ,why not if there in all the time ,theyve more right than i have in my eyes ,il tell you summat im not a regular customer at his but i do go now and again ,and MANY TIMES DEFINATLY ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION ive gettin bait when certain shops have had none on more than one occasion , infact to many times atb plum;)

cracking post mate,im one of the klingons in terry's shop and went in last saturday morning wanting some yellow tails to fish the match sam and co were running,"gis a few mins to see how many ive got spare" he said,he came back and said sorry mate they are all ordered.
my fault for not ordering and hats off to him for looking after his regulars.which i am one.
thats why in my opinion he's been in business for so long.
and will continue to be imho

Mako or should i say Darren, i wasnt such a bad bloke when you were wanting to get rid of the fly fishing tackle no one else seem to want.

I have nothing more to say after this post on this thread, the original poster was making a positive comment on a good experience he had in Andy Rutherords tackle shop,if you wanted to have a pop at me then why did you feel the need to high jack a thread that had no connection with me.

As i have said before i am an easy target and sometimes cannot do right for doing wrong, i am sorry you feel the way you do but thats your choice.

I will continue to look after my regulars, when there is a bait shortage they will get it before strangers and if this is bad business practice then i am guilty as charged your honour.

Cod only is living proof i dont keep bait for my so called mates, as he stated he asked for yellow tails on saturday morning and i had none spare for a very good mate as they were all preordered.
Fortunately he understands unlike some others.

i always use reelsport in hebburn and always get great service and great bait a young lad who me and my mates take fishing, reel had broke and didnt have a spare so bob who works there let him use his 525 mag while his got repaired. the same young lad a later time his rod required a repair so again bob helped and loaned him his kompressor sport so he could still go fishing. how many shops would do that not many, i think reelsport is a great shop

just out of curiosity how long has andy had the shop, was it a tackle shop before,or did he start from scratch:question:
Think The shop was built around Andy many years ago, sure i have vague memories of going in there with me dad when i was a nipper and i am knocking on forty now,yes think he starterd from scratch, think there was another shop at the top of roker avenue, cant remember the name........

I've been worried about this as it has posed questions that have kept me awake overnight...

At what point does a person become a regular or a klingon??

I have a bit of craic with the owner and the other lads in the shop and they too with me but we are by no means drinking buddies...

I use my preferred shop maybe once a week during the winter/summer but sometimes this will slip to maybe once a fortnight/three weeks during the leaner spells...but will these lapses mean I lose my status as a regular? (if indeed I was ever perceived thus?)

...and does monetary input into said shop equate to "regularity"? I will spend what I need on bait and buy odds and sods that take my eye and maybe once every two years upgrade a boat rod or have a re-build so by all accounts I'm not a big spender

...or does all of the above just make me a "normal" customer?
