CART bait?

crab mixed with bluey rivals cart me thinks when i cannot be arsed to sort some cart

dyeing sea stinking cock clam and runny any day

when you have all ya hen crabs emptied , pour the whole lot into a sieve, do this a couple of times, and the thicker remains pour this into flat trays about an inch deep and freeze... ( when you get good crabs full of coral it goes really thick and can sometimes be used without a carrier..) and also it can be salted and it goes really tough....

when frozen knock frozen slab of cart onto a bench and cut into your required bait size....
i prefer some about 2 inch long and some about an inch long,, (long ones an the back of the hook.... shorter in the inside.. if i am making a chocker bait..)

i then wrap each bait in cling film , and back in the freezer..
i have used all sorts of carrier from tea bags to finger bandage,,, but you have more control on the amount of scent/cart is released when using cling film..

i keep them frozen in a flask when using them...also a bit cloth in the flask filling the gap up keeps them frozen longer...

i whip them on the hook with bait elastic and pierce with grip wire or similar..
the more you pierce the more it washes out scent..

in all the years i have used cart i have never had the cling film come off the hook after being whipped on ..even when totally washed out...

just cut the elastic and cling film off and bag it... which i know all you responsible anglers do with your rubbish......

just remember that cart is not the "new wonder bait" ...its been around for donkeys... and like all baits sometimes it catches...sometimes it doesnt...

my personal preference with cart is to use as a cocktail with runnydown..

good luck lads with ya cart and i hope you have as much luck with it as i have had over the years..
cheers
Paul

On the point of, you'd probably never get stopped when leisure fishing, I wouldn't count on it. My mate and me were coming off the beach at whitley bay 4 weeks ago, when we were stopped by a couple of officials from the ministry asking what we had in our buckets as they were checking for anyone taking brown crabs or lobsters, we only had lug.
I think one of the reasons we are not aloud to use it north of the tyne, apart from being illegal is, how would you prove to them whether you bought or collected them. Taking undersize brown crab, "Peelers" means we're taking potters livelihood away. It also means potters can not use them in their lobster pots for bait, as lobsters love brown crab as well.
Don't know why different rules apply in different parts of the country though.
