Just posted a reply on Daza's catch report - sorry for pouncing on your thread - but just wondered if Chris Stringer is on NESA. I would be fascinated to hear how he/you manage to be so consistant in Comps. What are the secrets?

I remember fishing at Cresswell on some winter night as a kid, with me Dad, and a couple of lads from Alnwick Club said that there was a guy a few hundred yards away who was pendulum casting and catching Codling - no one else on the beach was catching. They said he was called Chris Stringer and it was like they were talking about Superman or something. Always remembered the name.

WHAT IS THE SECRET OF CATCHING FISH, BIG CHRIS ?...

Chris isn't a member unfortunately, anyway he probably wouldn't have time to post, he is always fishing, part of the secret.

Correct Alan and one of the other parts is that he doesn't just win on his home patch. Remember when you were at school and the teacher said that it was important to do your homework? Might be wrong but I suspect Chris was doing a certain type of homework....not necessarily at school.

I used to fish a lot with Chris back when I was a teenager (25-30 years ago - ouch!), not just here but on trips to west Scotland & all over, along with the much missed Malcolm McDonald. I saw him on many occasions catch fish when no-one else was, either by casting a bit further, or having some sort of spooky ability to know just where the fish were lurking.

I'll always remember after one west-coast match (which he'd won!) where I'd been having trouble with my reel, and unaware at the time that the policy for the day was to split the winnings, was over the moon the next day when he turned up at my door with a brand new Abu 7000. (Think they cost more back then than they do now!).

I just moved back to the N/East last winter & took up the fishing again - good to see him still going strong (along with many other familiar faces). Top angler who always fishes at maximum and exhausting (but instructive!) to watch.

Got a daft wee idea. All the old-timers with loads of experience should write books like Mr Storey or just write really long guides about how to fish in the North east so lazy sods like me can learn it all without having to put in thousands of hours like Mr Stringer.

im my little experiance it is all about practise and puitting the time in, you just need to get out there and try diffrent marks diffrent baits, i say little experiance, ive been fishing for 15 years lol, i still havnt had that dubble thogh, and i just got my first bass 1 week ago, but that just shows what im saying is true, ive only just started going out regular, and trying diffrent places, my new car does help aswell like, but if you get out, even if your just on a field practsing casting to get that bit extra distance, it all helps, and how about making a fishing diary for your self, like just writing down where you went fishing what bait you used what stait of tied, wind direction, how far you were casting, all that sort of stuf, so you can go through and see where fished on the stait of tide and what wind and all that before you go fishing, i still need to do this for myself, but sounds like a great idear

Once fished crawleys at whitley, in one of the opens and chris came down,had a bit crack nice bloke.Gotta say he`s the only bloke ive seen who can cast that far with an overhead thump.kept me right as well as at that time i had never fished there before.

Hi Jim - all's good except I have only been fishing about three times since I bumped into you on Tynemouth Beach couple of years back. As well as living in London I now have a baby boy who takes up valuable fishing time - what an error (just kiddin lol).

Anyway, Davyred get those fishing diaries online! Imagine the pleasure you would get from passing on all that valuable local knowledge

If Mr Fenech from Sea Angler reads this (is that how you spell the name - sorry if not) then please do a feature on Chris Stringer. I'm intrigued now. The bloke is an enigma...

think he has done his homework over the years and does well,just like the geoff king,he has to my knowlege won just as many opens if not more,i think its all about commitment and they both give it 110%.
call it bait luck or just jammy feckas.they deserve what they win for the effort they actually put in to the sport.as in other posts mr king also helps others out and is not afraid to pass on information.so much so he has all the sea-leauge results for the last 12yrs and on a think and is not shy on passing these on,well he wasnt with me and others thats if he still has them.
wonder what sort of money geoff and chris would make if they made a book on the fishing types including diares if they were to make such a thing.
a just think they deserve everything they win and they are are both icons to this sport.

On a more serious note, as all the good anglers on the board will know it's easy to put into print where the marks are but another thing as to where the holes in the marks are. They are 100 yards out today and 40 yards out next week. That's the bit of skill the good guys have plus they can cast 20 yards or 220 yards depending on what's needed. It's not a coincedence that Tony Taylor has won as many Opens as anyone but still wins the Seniors comps on Tynemouth Pier.

As a junior angler i used to fish for whitley bay juniors, and can remember some of them times like it was only yesterday, it was fascinating learning how to fish by the likes of Chris, Tony Taylor, Tony Anderson and John Nixon, they were all ( and still are ) fantastic fishermen, and really nice blokes who would help you anyway they could.

Every year they used to take the juniors to Loch Long for 4 days fishing, i was very lucky to either stay in Chris's caravan or with the late Malcolm Mc'donald every year.

Also, we all used to fish the ferry lading on a sunday morning ( the ferry did'nt start till 12 noon them days ), the fishing used to be hectic, and very rarely did you ever catch less than 6 fish each, only downside was climbing over the big gate.......if anybody remembers them days i bet you could'nt climb the fence now !!!.

Talking of memorys, brings me to another legend, our own Mr Charlton, a man who could dig worms like no other, he was a one man mechanical shovel and always got 3 times as many worms as anyone else ( bigger and better ones ), i could'nt get up at 4 on a freezing cold winters morning and drive up to Berwick or Budle Bay, dig for 5 or 6 hours then come home get changed and go straight out fishing....it's hard enough to to go to the shop buy some worms and leave the telly these days......what about you Alan ??
