Craster This Morning 23/06/13

Fancied a few hours out this morning fishing down to low so headed up to Craster with a handfull of frozen crab and mussell.

Got set up off the back end of Cushat Steel into the heavy kelp with a 5/0 kelp rig.

End result was 2 reddys and a coalie for my 2.5 hours before the tide turned and the rain came !

Must add a thanks to Norma @ Amble Angling for the bait and for filleting them for me

just curious but do these kelp cod taste any different to normal cod?

A lot of lads dont take red cod because they are usually full of worms, especially the gills. Apparently its due to the fact they are swimming slower as the ground close in has more obstacles than the open water where they can swim faster. It means less worms can attach...so Ive been told!!!

They pick up more worms when they share the inshore habitat with the seals - the worms grow in the seals & the fish pick them up from all the seal poop. Otherwise, they taste no different, they can take on a dark colour very quickly in a kelpy environment.

It's a type of shrimp that eats the seal crap that contains the worm eggs. The cod then eat the shrimps that now contain worm larvae and the worms grow in the gut and migrate into the meat.

A seal eats the cod and the worms mature in the seal's gut and lay a new set of eggs for the seal to crap out and shrimps to find.

Cycle complete.

That's exactly right Google cod worm a normal home freezer won't kill them you need hot oil I always cut the belly sides off the dark cod over the mull are riddled with them just used to throw them back only seen a couple in pollock and haddock out of hundreds of fish so don't be trying any shushmi

Cheers, I knew it had something to do with seals! Local reddies don't seem to bad as far as worms go, often get the odd one in fresh runners too, but whiting often seem to be riddled with the little buggers...

I think you find its a different parasite cod worm are in the flesh and you can get some big ones
