Disgraced at fishing gear snobs.

Kenny, my advice for what its worth is:

Next time you go into any shop try not to feel intimidated, i know from experience it is a lot easier to say than do.

Remeber one thing which is the most important, the tackle you are using allows you to get out and enjoy the sport of fishing and gives you the chance to meet other fellow anglers, the majority are keen to help and make your learning curve a pleasant one.

Another thing to remember is world champions in any given sport had to start from scratch, and if its any concillation there is absolutely nothing wrong with stillwater gear in fact its very good value for money.

If you think someone is making snide remarks about your choice of tackle, rise above them, smile at them just to let them know you heard and by saying nowt it will really P them off, dont drag yourself down to their level by having a go.

You should see some of the tackle i use (not gonna pretend i havent got some expensive kit cos i have but that dont make me a tackle tart) some of the lads i fish with cant believe i some of the tackle i use, but i do sometimes catch a few fish.

I know this post may sound a bit jumbled but hope it makes sense.

regards
Terry

great advice terry, thanks alot:)

As Lingking quoted...fishermen with expensive/latest tackle are generally quite modest about it....., i'll openly admit i like buying new gear, when i'm allowed, and i'm probably a tackle tart in a way, but i would hate to think that made me a bad person,....I think it comes down to the sort of personality the abuser has, one person on his own would'nt have the bottle to give you grief but these people get false courage by hunting in packs.
I've been fishing for 38 years now, made some great friends and also met some to$$ers, as you most certainly will...99.9% of anglers are good people the other 0.01% you met in that tackle shop..
Kenny i hope you enjoy your fishing mate, DONT LET ANYTHING PUT YOU OFF,,,,;)

tell you a story about sniggering, many years ago couple of us went to southern ireland fishing, theres a mark called barrow harbour, mate said to me wait till one eater arrives, local old guy with one tooth in his head ( mate had fished the place before) we had all the gear, all new, all shiny, chesties the lot, an hour later we had a couple of flaties but it was hard work, this guy arrives, basically hes got what resembled a brush pole with an old old fresh water fixed spool on it,the wieght was an old spark plug, now im punching fresh sandeel out with one rod and heaving another 50 yards, `one eater` flings his about his max cast 50 foot, no more line on the spool, now i will admit im having a snigger when he announced, `i has one, its about three pund`, an hour later and 4 more bass he says hes off as sports not that good !! by them snigger has turned to humble pie n the realisation good gear dont mean you will catch, especially when we still had no bass !!!, once he left we moved to his mark and cast into the same place, no bass, met the old guy again, he told us not to waste our time untill the water reached the post, then after an hour give up, he had fished the place for over 60 years and it was always the same if you wanted bass, i asked him if he was going to replace his gear, simple answer why ? came back

"Hobby Shops" IE shops that service a hobby are by their very nature strange places...music shops for example are designed to make you feel inferior the moment you walk in as the sales assistant is usally 16 years old and more gifted than Mozart. Those shops that are for the "gamer types" rolling eight sided dice are to be avoided at all costs lest you get sucked in to their strange ethereal world...

Angling shops are similarly no different - magical places with all sorts of mystery items hanging from the rafters...not to mention the section cordoned off for the rubber chest high suits :o

As has been mentioned these places attract all sorts and I defy anyone to tell me that Anglers are "normal" people...hobbies by definition bring out the obsessive streak in all who take part in them....and like all cults and sects you will find the odd rogue

Like Terry says rise above 'em, don't give them the satisfaction....as has also been said we've all met them out there "Aye like I arnly buy a rod if it's £750 or more coz it's designed to help me power cast 1000 yards leyk - which I cannit demonstrate right now coz I put me back out pulling in a 42lb pig oot the kelp last sunda!" (IE they're full of sh**)

You buy what you can afford and you use what you're comfortable using - like has been said the cheaper end stuff is good for beginning with and getting a taster for the sport...you'll prob even catch more fish than the tackle tarts...such is the way of karma

I've experienced this as well, but they change the tune when it's you reeling in the fish and not them.

I have expensive gear and cheap gear and quite often the cheap stuff is better suited for my type of fishing. I don't mind if it gets scuffed off rocks or conrete walls and I don't care what others say. :p

My son (4 yrs olds) is currently using an old 8ft telescopic rod with a cheap fixed spool and some 15lb line, so far this year he's outfished me 4 out 7 times using a simple rod and reel combo with a pennel 2oz 2/0 hook rig, he's had coalies, wrasse, codling, rockling, flounders, plaice, sandeels and even a schoolie bass and a bloody big Brown crab off Blyth Pier (Which well and truly put a smile on his face :) ) next year will bring him an upgrade to a 9ft pier rod and reel combo and he'll graduate to safe daylight rock fishing.

So it's not what you got - it's how you use it, and how much fun you have doing it! ;)

Out on an old cobbler form Seaham about 4 years ago i was watching an old boy jigging for cod, He polished up the lead on a 10 oz sinker which had a couple of hooks on some string out of the bottom. Did the job fine.Cost almost nowt.
Fancy jiggers in shop which i had bought were very expensive.

was fishing the Middleton pier last year when this lad and his young son came on and set up not 5 yards from me their rods where brand new cheap beach-casters with cheap fixed spool reels and i could see that they didn't have a clue about every thing to do with fishing, after about half an hour watching them trying to cast[and getting nowhere] i said to them, excuse me but i hope you don't mind me saying but you are doing it all wrong, they readily agreed and said it was their first time fishing but said they wanted to go fishing after watching extreme fishing, so i showed them how to cast explained to them what a shock leader was and tied one on each of their main lines ;[they where using 15lbs line straight through with a 6oz lead]told them that you want more than half a ragworm on your hook gave them a pennel rig each to use and copy when they got home etc they thanked me for my time and patience and you know what i enjoyed passing on my limited angling knowledge on to them and never took the p##s once well maybe once but i was only joking .

I know exactly what you're talking about regarding the tackle shop gobsh1tes, but my advice is not to be afraid to ask advice. It won't take long to work out the good guys who know what they are talking about and are willing to help, as opposed to the smart@rses. No different to every other walk of life.

Don't let the b@stards grind you down....as they say.

gear

Remember fisherman are people some are cool some are wankers just like all walks of life. You met some wankers. Most fishermen are cool.

"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. (Mark Twain).

I've fished with guys like this before, if you've got decent rods n reels they'll tell you why there's is better, if you have cheap gear they tell you why you should have some like their's and why do they always have a reel bag with about 6 reels in and insist on getting them out to show you:rolleyes:

what really f***s me off is the guys from the clubs who have all the expensive gear and they do catch a lot of fish and also win or come close to winning the comps, you see them in shops giving advice and when the novice customer has gone they take the p**s outa them with there mates
(sometimes there even behind the counter serving)

These guys should know better, a few of them are quite well known names.
