earliest mackerel ?

What date was the earliest mackerel caught off S/S Seahem or Roker piers? I recon the last week in May . Just curious

Had them as early as mid may in the past but that normally depends on a warm winter and a long warm settled spring to clear up the water..... At least the winter was warm this year! Lol

The 2 main factors you need right are availability of bait fish and settled conditions which create water clarity, the water temp is not a major factor contrary to popular belief.

Three yrs ago they showed at Seaham in March..... but only for a week then came back mid May....

water temperature is a major factor. Last year was a good example. All the other factors were right but the temperature was under 10 C in June. Result no mackies. As soon as it hit 14+clarity, they came in numbers

I think the plankton in the water needs to be there as that's there main thing they eat

17th of May was my earliest but its early June.

People seem to think they should be here end of April early May our days, when i used to fish for them it was not considered to start until June

To an extent... Water temp is a factor for the bait fish which is the factor in mackerel turning up...

The mackerel don't come in till the smell 47 litres of frosty jack on the piers. Won't be long now.

I heard from a reliable source he had them 2nd May once over.

Personally I jsut wait until July, get my qouta for the winters bait and get outa there!

From the comments received the mackerel season could go from mid march till mid november please don't tell the lager lads,,,,,

caught 2 mackerel in a club match about 3 years ago middle of march came as quite a shock reeling in with a 2 hook flapper rig baited with ragworm and the season before my marra swany droped 1 off lifting it in xmas fayre early december.

rememeber a few years ago maki had been gone for a canny while, about 3 got caught in 3 days next thing you seen was maki packets all over the pier again, it was laughable maki bashers back in early october thinking loads were about and it was quite cold

Tropical Seaham unlucky for swany could have had fresh mackerel for xmas

Water temp only dropped to 6 degrees over the winter mate due to it being so mild ...
