Fishing at distance over rough ground

I've got 30lb main and a 80lb leader, I use gemini rotten bottoms as I feel if I do wish to put more into the cast then they are safe and the line set up am using won't snap of and injure someone.
Remember though even when your using a shock/rubbing leader to check it regular, I replace mine after every trip out as it will get damaged ova rocks and pulling up cliffs

He's on about blasting weights out as far as he can!
With that set up he'll either seriously injure or kill someone one day

He was asking peoples preference at distance not 'blasting weights out', distance is achieved through technique and not pure power, i fish cliffs/rocks on my own occasionally with my bro so there is never anyone around and i have never had a crack off, if i was going to 'blast weights out' i would use a shockleader. After all its common sence.

Exactly! When I fish 30lb straight through I'm also using a home made clipped rotton bottom, so power castings out anyway. Even a smooth cast gets you 100-120 yards with bait! If I need to cast further my slosh comes off and my shimano speedmaster goes on, 18-20lb mainline with a shockleader. Safety first! A lot of the time 50 yards is too far anyway!

i've just started using 30lb sufix tritanium on a 535 mag with a leader and can put a clipped down rig a good distance. but in all honesty theres not many places round here in heavy ground where you need to be lashing the tits off it.
totaly agree all my big fish have been caught 40 to 50 yards out,no need to cast 120 to 140 yards ,you have more chance of landing your fish just lobbing it a short distance on our local marks best of luck adam either way . davy.

20 lb F1, then a 70lb leader at a length of 25ft min, that takes the strain of ya cast if trying to get max distance and also as Andy says, it acts as a rubbing leader, wouldnt care if i had 30 or 40 line straight through i wouldnt be trying for max distance, its an accident waiting to happen in my opinion

This is so easy

Try using suffix tritanium 20lb but tie the leader on using a bimini twist

then use a 10lb rotten bottom for the lead and a hook length of 20lb amnesia

the hook or lead will 99% break first

i use this for all my rough ground fishing even in heavy kelp

since i started this my catch rates went up as i can get a very good distance if required but also a short lob if needed

Sean

not been funny mate but using 20lb hook length when fishing for cod especaily over hard/kelpy ground is total madness imo.

i wouldnt use anything below 40lb for me hook lengths and even sometimes use 60lb clear powerflex when im fishing ne were with a lift.

i hope it never happens but i can see you geting smashed a few times of good fish using 20lb hooklength. id look to start using summit stronger cos yav got no chance of getting decent fish through kelp with 20lb.

tight lines.

best tip is to fish up a height.

that way your more likely to get your fish back on light gear as long as its strong enough to hoist up fish:red:

Just a thought but think of all them days when lobbing 40 to 50yds produced a blank perhaps a bait at distance into some tide may of produced that bonus fish until you try it you'll never know , getting the bite and hooking it may be the easy bit getting it back may be just a bit harder .

Thats a canny cast 120yards with a decent cod bait and 30lb line straight through!

Daiwa slosh 20, 18lb Daiwa sensor main line, connected with a bimini twist to 60lb trilene shocker, pully rig with 15lb rotten bottom attached to a gene clip.
Takes me all my time to snap out if properly fast up.

Read it properly!

It says he's thinkn of blasting weights out at distance and wants to know what lads set ups are who fish at distance

If you use the set up you mentioned to fish at distance then one day you will cause someone an injury and it'll prob be your bro if that's who you fish with

I know exactly how distance is achieved thanks
Pop down to the tournament field and we'll watch your technique casting at distance with your 30lb line straight through

30lb straight through and a clipped pennel pulley.

accident waiting to happen if you are power casting that set up mate , unless obviously you are using a 2 oz sinker and big bait, either that or you are not putting full power and body rotation into ya cast, i know if i were to do that i would defo have a crack off

Had a bit of a practice a couple of months ago and, using the footy pitch at school as a guide, found I could lob it about 110 yards without a hook and, therefore, bait and that's with a 7oz sinker and 60lb line, straight through.

In all my years of fishing I've only ever come away beaten by the distance once and that was at the Astley Arms, high tide, trying to hit the hole which was......112 yards away lol.
Had I waited an hour or two I'd have been OK but high tide is a, relatively, novel experience for us in the NE and I left with my tail between my legs as the big casters brought in a fish a chuck.

On most of the NE coast the tangles are well within 100 yards and yes you can win comps, usually in poor conditions, by winging it 200 yards (and I wish I could) but most often the fish are at your feet. If you're thinking of guys on this board may I remind you that in the recent NvS comps and the NESA comps my brother Rod has had 2 heaviest fish (casting no more than 60 yards with 30lb main line) and I've caught more than the whole South team, catching within 60 yards.

There you go - a thread devoid of loads of fishing terms that include technical terms that not only involve considerable skill, putting them together but also knowledge and expense.
Hope it encourages others to fish simply.
