Fished the MOG last june and caught plenty down on the left hand side but I was eager to know if anyone has fished near the end straight down from the lighthouse as I have heard there is a path but I couldn't find it last time.

path
underestimation mate
steep climb down
ive got some pics somewhere of the route down, imwill see if i can find them and post them

Fished there before...1 hell of a rip.

No good for bottom fishing ont he cast in mho but worth a congor bait down the side, had all the normal species on float and lures..i.e wrasse, pollack, coalie, mackerel etc.

As Sless says.."path" not really climb it is :)

Saw that rip, coming from the end, when looking from the top, will try and fish it in july. On the subject of "paths", you're right about climbing I didn't realise until I went up for the first time last june but I'll be better prepared next time. Had some good pollack at the yellow isle at Port Patrick, on the left side, and lost some better ones, must be some massive torpedos down there!

Did you manage to land that Tope Snatcher?
i've been toying with the idea of trying for a Tope from the shore for a couple of years. caught plenty while out fishing with spike and ian burrett.

On my grandbairns death ---------------------

Went there on a Sunday afternoon to get to get a bagfull of mackerel for a barbie, dead simple.I was only supposed to fish for 10 mins tops. First cast got a mackerel,as you do there and put it into a rock pool.Second cast hooked a smallish tope but in that tide rip and with 15lb mono it snapped me after 90 mins.

Just thought it was a one off, tied on another toby and went looking for the mackerel.First cast hooked another tope with same ending. As I was playing it two anglers turned up and thats who took the picture.I did offer them the rod with the tope on but they declined!!!

The short answer is yes tope are caught from that mark. The guys in the know use a pulley rig.If you intend to have a bash just make sure the fish are put back as quickly and carefully as possible.

On the downside you will be plauged with conger and doggies

This is the view down, but it doesn't put it into perspective what its really like. Like the lads have said, don't even think about it in the wet.

I think I've fished your mark John. Scramble is a good word :D...if it is the same mark, 'heart attack' is a way to describe the walk back up.

Yep basically you park in the Mull lighthouse,go through the gate on the east side and follow the wall all the way down to the sea.The wall mark is in front of you, that is where I hooked the tope. Walk to the left 100 yds or so and you have the pinnacle mark,go on another 100yds or so and you come to the flat rock mark. All can produce tope. Its only ther last 10/15 yds that are a bit "scrambly".

The walk back up that pasture with all your gear back to the car park - now that really does me in.Be easier for younguns mind!

Tope from the MOG

Tope from the MOG

Cheers for the photos, whilst up there in june 08 a mate of mine got a Tope of around 20lbs while we were fishing for doggies, it was on the left hand side accross the field through the small gate and down to a comfortable area where you can fish 4 easily. I intend to target them when we go back up in july with a big mackerel bait on a big hook and a wire trace and try and avoid the doggies.

Yep that was the Flat Rock or the Pinnacle by the sound of it.Quite a few tope are taken from there during every summer. The place teems with fish at times. Those lads who target the tope use a pully rig

Lagvag is a nono for me now,too old and the bottle has gone.Mind you it is a great fishing mark. These were taken during "lads week" 2005.Thats Young Snatcher on the left

Basically you go down by the helecopter landing mark and follow the path past where it says "danger cliffs" !!! Its fine for 90% then you come to the choice.I done the scramble to the left twice last year and I was crappin me pants.

Lagvag is the choice to the right which I have not done myself. The photos from lads week 2005 were supplied via young Snatcher. The crack is as you are going down your mate guides your feet into the footholds !!!

Well young Snatch said he would never do it again - he has small balls like his dad.Best of British. As a precaution a life jacket makes sense on this one.

Need any more info just ask

John

ps plan B is much safer, the wall mark
