killing crabs

Hi All

just new to sea fishing and after reading crab is a good bait i have bought myself a small trap, but how do you kill the crab humanely?

I have read about stabbing the crab between the eyes but is that done from the front so you are facing the crab or through its shell from the top and down between its eyes?

If its the Brown crab (Edible) put it in the freezer for a hour or so before boiling,this is the most humane way .....

Hi mate, if its hard shore crab your on about you use as bait mate you can in summer for wrasse but not really a top bait in winter months Read these articles... It may be of some help.

You could just freeze them down mate, apart from getting all their arms and claws ripped off, lungs cut out and eyes gouged out before freezing it should be a pretty painless way for them to go.

Mate a hate to make u sound daft but when you say you've bought a small trap am guessing you've bought a small crab pot, etc.

Just to stop you from flying blind into this, you cannot collect peeler crabs in this way. They will not take bait as they do not feed whilst in the peeling state, so they cannot be collected in this way. Many people, including myself, have there own crab traps, mainly rows of tyres sunk into the mud which the peeling crabs will scuttle into for protection from other crabs and fish whilst they shed there old shells and re-harden there new ones.

Crab can be a deadly bait this time year, especially cocktailed with a big juicy lugworm. I myself caught my PB cod of 4lb 5ozs yesterday on a whole peeler crab.

yep its a little crab pot to throw over the edge of pier. i didnt think there would be any difference from using a whole peeler crab to taking the meat out of a bigger crab and using that.

at least nobody said don't be stupid its just a crab, for wanting to kill it humanely

Good on you mate, ****es me off when I see people get a crab on the hook, Take it off stand on it and kick it back!
