Just wanted to know for sure before I give my relatives food poisoning?

Can a freshly caught mackeral fillets be kept in the fridge overnight to be cooked or frozen the following day?
Or must they be immediately frozen?

Hi Sigsy, You can keep keep them in the fridge for a few days ok but taste better the day after they were caught. best frozen down as soon as possible, but imo , the longer they are in the freezer they become fishing bait. hope this helps :)

mackerel taste thier best 1 to 2 hours after being caught, the longer you keep them their flesh and taste deteriates, max: day in the fridge any longer freeze them down for bait:red:

Sigsy, mackerel horrible things, taste awful, but if you do want to keep some for eating, keeping them in a cold fridge for a couple of days will be ok, after that freeze and the quicker you can freeze them the better, if you have a super freeze on your freezer use it. Another thing, use a good quality cling film and wrap them up well, two or three layers, dont let any flesh be left uncovered or it will suffer freezer burn. If you do it properly you can keep mackerel quite a while. But as they are horrible tasting you had far better just give me all your mackerel.

if you're going to freeze you're fish don't wash them first, use some kitchen roll on them first, pat them to get all the moisture out before you freeze them as any moisture/water in them expands when frozen and breaks the flesh down, main reason a lot of peoples fish goes mushy when thawed
