Mackerel - the debate continues...

Having caught my first of the season last night I can sort of see why the kids head down to the piers to "hammer" them...

There were old and young walking off the pier last night with bag fulls and one lad even sneered at my single catch..."heeyah y'anly caught one 'krel? - snigger snigger"

One young charva lass walked past (without rod!!??) with a good 10 or so in a placcy bag....what was it you said Keith? "they smelled your perfume love and jumped straight out" LMFAO...she was honking like!!

I can understand that people catch them for winter bait, I can also understand that they are also a quality eating fish...Charlie Thompson in an earlier thread called them "noble little Tigers"...that's an apt definition; as my 10ft spinning rod was bent over trying to land a macky that's doing cartwheels trying to unhook itself it did indeed feel like I'd hooked a small tiger.

It was great fun - and I reckon I'll be doing it again before the summer is out.

If I'd gone down with my 12ft beach caster and a string of daylights I don't think I'd have enjoyed it half as much

aye people go daft every year. See a few people being sensible but a hell of a lot more going mad.
I prefer spinning, take a couple for bait and a couple for the pan, never spend more than about an hour on the pier, keeps it fun rather than repetative.

Some good points Tony. Sunday I fished with my spinning rod, last night I used one of my Carp rods and with both you can't hurry them up.

Tonight I will be using one of my telescopic rod and having some real fun lol. It collapses to less than 18" and although I bought it over a year ago I havn't tried it yet but know it will be great fun lol.

The crack about that young chav was a cracker Keith, honking would be about right mind. Dog sh*te in Paris by smell no. 5, not nice at all. I actually think my hands smelled better after gutting my three Mackerel, if I had a few more they may have smelled MUCH better. :D :D :D

Jim.

My telescopic coped pretty well last night - I'm not sure how it would fare with a bigger fish mind you...I'll just have to wait for the summer, when I'm pulling in a 10lb welsh Bass on it, to see....(yeah right)

The technology with rods has definitely come on since I was a kid though....A telescopic a few years ago would have been as bendy as a shoe lace, the one I fished with last night casted well and handled the fish well - even when pulling it 15ft up in the air with a macky thrashing away like mad!!

my fave rod for them is the bairns 6 foot telescopic spinning rod, ron thomson one, cost a fiver, rated to 12 grams!

takes a bout 5mins to land each one, but the looks from the fukwits down there, you'd think you were an alien

"you wanna get a proper rod mayt"

given pice and quiet its nice to go progressively lighter and lighter, I reckon it improves your over all fishing technique, cos you've got to learn to play them properly, use the clutch and the like. No better sound in the world than the clutch on a reel screaming as a fish takes off

sounds like i need to invest in a spinning rod!!!

fished for mackys with my 12ft rod ,cos thats all if got lol, but with only 2 daylights on and only took enough fish for dinner.

I reckon Mark's onto something...I may buy one of those cheapy affairs and set the clutch on the reel quite light (I wouldn't trust the reels that they come with as they only carry about ten yards of line)...would be a hoot to spend ages fighting and playing a macky....I remember what it was like last night, the rod just stopped like I'd hit a snag then it just went mental on the end

Dead right Mark, just sorted my kit out for tonight and have stuck two light telescopic rods in. Still tempted to take a little rod and reel combo I bought a couple of years back but might leave that till next time lol.

Jim.

I think the line on one reel is 12 lb and on the other is 18 lb I put the 18 lb on for the rock fishing though as it can get a bit scarred. I will just be using some small silver lures mate, the type you can get anywhere.

Jim.

i know the ones you are on about jim i have a few in my bag, i might try my river spinning reel with 5lb on just to give it a shot. tried it in crete and it can chuck a small lure out no problem

cheers
mark
