Having caught my first of the season last night I can sort of see why the kids head down to the piers to "hammer" them...
There were old and young walking off the pier last night with bag fulls and one lad even sneered at my single catch..."heeyah y'anly caught one 'krel? - snigger snigger"
One young charva lass walked past (without rod!!??) with a good 10 or so in a placcy bag....what was it you said Keith? "they smelled your perfume love and jumped straight out" LMFAO...she was honking like!!
I can understand that people catch them for winter bait, I can also understand that they are also a quality eating fish...Charlie Thompson in an earlier thread called them "noble little Tigers"...that's an apt definition; as my 10ft spinning rod was bent over trying to land a macky that's doing cartwheels trying to unhook itself it did indeed feel like I'd hooked a small tiger.
It was great fun - and I reckon I'll be doing it again before the summer is out.
If I'd gone down with my 12ft beach caster and a string of daylights I don't think I'd have enjoyed it half as much
