Mullet

I've not noticed anyone mention Mullet on here, the fish not the bad hair-do... In the past I've had them when the hot water pipe was still there at Cambois so they're certainly around our coast - anyone tried targetting them?

Are they still around our coast though?

Hunted around for them locally to have a bash with the fly rod and I can only find reference to them in any numbers at Hull and Dunbar, otherwise the rest of the NE coast now looks to be devoid of any mullet?

Plenty still on the west coast between cumbria and the mull.

However, I would love to be corrected about this and find a local mullet spot (PM's please and it would be catch and release)

there are areas in the NE that you can catch mullett, but they are kept quiet for obvious reasons, the plonkers would be out there and you wouldnt get moved, and instead of putting the fish back they would be keeping them. I for one am not taking the risk of being lynched for advertising these venues. And please dont pm me asking for deatils, as you wont get them. Has anyone tried Cambois since the outlet went, I know for a fact that bass and mullett where caught there before the power station was built.

I fished the pipe a couple of times once the power station was gone and had nothing, tried the beach once when the actual pipe was gone and just had little flatties and haven't been back since.

supposed to be very wary and easily spooked, seen (on tv) a guy groundbaiting a spot the day before then heading back with very light gear, tiny hook and just bread flake for bait. Few I had on the pipe were taken when I was using tiny hooks with rag head-hooked.

Bread flake, maggot and head hooked maddies on a tiny mepps lure seem to be the common ways to catch them down south. However, friends of mine have had them (in numbers) to a selection of flies such as bread flies, egg flies, shad flies, red tags, nymphs, bibbio's, kate mclarrens, black pennels, a tiny pink and white clouser and a selection of black and silver seatrout flies, fished on an intermediate or sink tip line.

If your targeting mullet then you have to know where they are, i mean actually see the mullet with your own eyes, like trout fishermen do.
light-tackle (coarse-fishing gear). a clue to where to find them is where a stream or an pipe out-let pores into the sea. harbours are great places.
i have only fished for them once and caught loads because i could see them swimming around a pipe out-let in plymouth naval-base. as said above on bread.
they are experts at spitting food out of there little mouths, and they are heavy fish and fight like hell.;):D

When we went to Weymouth for the boat fishing compo last year there was a wet fish shop in one of the towns on the coast. I popped in for a look and they had Mullet for sale. It really can grow to a big size. Big scales and grey in colour. The ones for sale must have been over four pounds in wieght.
