after all what percentage of 4 \" coalies reach 13.8\", very few./quote]

Even less if people take them for pot bait or pike bait- But what about the undersize mackerel for Bass Debate ,does it happen , do you agree with it or is it Just another Rat of the Sea ??

i put it down to the seangling mentality whats the point of catching fish if you cant keep them to eat

i fish both types fresh and sea and personaly id like to keep some of the freshwater fish i catch for the pan but the law says no

30 maccy in the freezer will last me about a months worth of sea fishing bait

to answer the original question yes id livebait an undersized maccy to catch a big bass as im putting it back ;) ,what i wouldnt do is take it home.as for taking a photo and returning the bigger fish ,not a hope in hell as its a chance to be the only biggun ill ever catch

freshwater fishing with salt water species i have no problem with at all as i dont think keeping a few will harm stock levels ,the netters do much more damage, while i agree with many of the laws brought in to protect fish stocks i think there aimed at the wrong people ,i keep what i can eat or use for bait and return the rest can the same be said for the commercial fishermaen ?,how many people could honestly say if they caught a trout or salmon it would be returned, its all very well to sit in front of the pc and say youd do this or do that until the day comes when its in the net ,i think once its landed the atitude would change,,,and why shouldnt i keep a pike that ive paid for the privlage of catching (i think that law needs looking at) :D :D tablets kicking in now shutting up

I\'ve never seen any recipes for Pike, Bri.......lol..... mind you, I\'ve not seen any for Swan, either......but I gather they make good eating - well it\'s good enough for Royalty ;)

hugh thingy wintinwhatsit river cottage potted pike ,im not singling pike out lol theres a few edible course fish, carp for one ,then again ill try owt once, just pointing out that i dont think theres such a thing as a sea angling mentality ,many members on here fish for the sport returning all catches,me ill hold to the hunter gatherer theory ,i fish for the pot..just to follow on you see it time and time again in the afor- mentioned river cottage and other programmes the blokes done ,frying up undersized eels etc ,,celeb anglers hooking on undersized fish to spin for bigger catches ,,seems theres different rules depending on who you are

How many people return Codling, a species that we know only too well is in possible terminal decline. That the situation is not one of anglers making doesn\'t alter that fact, they are under serious threat. How many boat anglers keep double figure fish to turn into many tinier fillets. The legal situation on these matters is one thing. The moral arguments are a little more complex.

I\'ve eaten pike! canny but lots of bones, eaten perch as well, I fish for the pot also, If you ain\'t gonna eat it don\'t try catch it

some of the nicest frshwater fish I\'ve eaten have been of and extremely dubious legal status!

undersized are a brilliant bait for catching angkllers as well it seems!

Couple of comments..

Firstly I don\'t catch a lot of fish, only fishing half a dozen times a year, so I\'m probably allowed to keep them all, to eat, on a pro rata basis, but I\'d always keep the 2lber and put back the 10lber (the breeding fish) as has been stated earlier in the thread.

Secondly, the total number of fish I catch in my lifetime will never match the amount of fish dumped by some ocean going trawler during one trip because some quota has been reached. We must dump as many fish as we sell. Where is the logic in that??

Finally with regard to shore fishing conservation, when I came up for the boat comp and then sneaked off up to St Abbs I caught a codling about 3lb, which I kept for the in laws (Summer fish, soft, full of worms....... think of the will..... I digress) That fish had my hook from the day before in its belly - same hook, thread and crab... so they will survive you putting them back, even perhaps those deeply hooked.

i think bribones has hit the nail on the head its the huntergatherer in all of us but there one difference we dont depend on what we catch to eat cos we do it for sport cos if we did most of us would starve and yes i would eat a pike if my life depended on it

Wasn\'t going to even answer thiis post as it is now getting a wee bit boring.

All of these things have been said before.

All I can say is read Davyreds post. Keeping undersizied fish is illegal.

No argument no conversation no disscussion.

Jim.

There was a comment earlier about tackle shops selling undersize bait. i don\'t know if this refers to some of the small mackerel that is sold blast frozen. Had a look at the legal sizes and it appears it\'s only 20cm except in the North Sea where it\'s 30cm. I suppose it\'s where they are caught.

Another debate is if you catch a small mackerel for instance and then return it to the sea, albeit with a hook attached, are you keeping it?

Aye Jim, I realise it IS a case of going over well trodden ground and most people have had their say on the issue, but there\'s been a good number of people joined the site since this was last raised........they now have a chance to voice their opinion, also.

However, to my mind, there IS only 1 view.......the keeping of LEGALLY DEFINED undersized fish is illegal.......NO ARGUMENT.....and that rule applies to ALL anglers fishing within the bounds of the area that the rule applies to.

By the way......incase anybody got the wrong idea........I don\'t drive at 55mph on 30mph roads.........I was only citing that as a similar ridiculous reason for assuming that a set limit didn\'t apply on environmental grounds.........lol

Lol Peter.......I think the word should be \"released\" not \"returned\" ;)

lol, pleased I\'ve been on Nights,Its Illegal...............Sorry Micky got to agree with Davy,we could talk about this for ever but it changes nothing..................................

Going back to Charlton, s post regarding DEFRA. I have just had an interesting conversation with the fisheries department of DEFRA and they sugest if you want to report people for taking undersized fish ( as it is illegal ) you should phone either of these numbers.
For the north side of the Tyne-- Northumberland Fisheries Committee 01670 731399
For south side of the Tyne---North eastern Fisheries Committee 01482 339690
Hope this helps everyone

DEFRA wre not aware that NESA existed, but they,ve now had a look at the site and are very impressed that there are so many concerned anglers.

Funny not DEFRA not knowing about NESA they went along South Shields pier when anglers from NESA raised their concerns about the undersized mackerel being taken by a certain section of anglers. And I quiter ofetn have dealings with the lads at Shields. Who was it you spoke to Malcolm, Rob or Ian

Similar subject but I cant be bothered to start a new topic lol

Two words i hate
MACKY BASHING
sounds like
fox bashing
seal bashing
rabbit bashing
badger bashing or is that baiting
deer bashing
whale bashing
cat bashing
dog bashing
mink bashing
pheasant bashing
grouse bashing
get the message..............
Anti\'s will be saying what does this mean, lets go along one of these piers and take a look............................... :casstet:

Alan, I cant recall who it was I spoke to regarding NESA. I was talking to a young lady at DEFRA for a while then she passed me on to the gentleman who gave me the numbers. He had,nt heard of NESA so I giuded him through the site as we talked.
I,m just glad I could get those numbers. The school holidays start soon, then just think of the slaughter of small fish and mackrel on all the piers.
