shockleader

No good for the 16 and 17ft rods Harry.
A mate was using them on a 17ft rod with braid next to me last year,he kept wondering why he was cracking off when casting.
Turned out the heavier part of the leader did,nt reach the reel.

the tapered shock leaders i use are 15 m long
on a 13' rod and theres plenty on the reel

Was just going to say the same thing - I use tapered leaders on my little 7ht mags & 6500 sized reels (for use over clean ground) & have used them on my 16ft rod no problem, still get at least two passes across the spool of the heavier line when ready to cast. I also cut off about 5 or 6 foot of the thin end - it looks a little thinner than the mainline I'm using so trim it to where it's a little thicker. I don't use them over mixed or rough ground as they're expensive, but over sand they're fine - my last spool of 5 leaders lasted me about 18 months.

On the rest of my reels I like the 60lb Suffix stuff, I've tried others and this seems good value & well behaved when using it, not too springy & nice and strong.

The taper shock leader should be fine for any length of rod, there's ample length of the heavy line to get safely 6 wraps on the reel spool.
So was your mate pendulum casting with a 17ft rod ? and if so what drop length was he using ?.
Was the reel in the low position.
Even so still should be plenty left.
And if the heavy line was to short did he not think to add a little extra to the end of the rig end to compensate for it.

Just out of interest does anyone know the cost of these tapers these days
it a long time ago that I bought them, and I only stopped buying because of the costs but would like to go back to them again.

Got them from Lewis Tackle in W/Bay, don't forget to mention you're a NESA member & you get 10% off the list price :red:
