Snow

Got the #53 Arriva bus from Newsham to Cobalt this morning, turned up late after most of the buses were having a job starting, got to cobalt 2 3/4hrs after I left the house, almost 2hrs late into work. Saw ploughs and gritters around the Great Lime Road area but nowhere else.

took me 30 mins to dig myself out my street - got to work 5 mins late and straight into helping the other blokes dig out the car park...not a woman in sight (except for the cuppas)...enlightened times we live in eh? :p:D;)

Nothing here in sunny, but cold, Cannock. Roads clear, buses on time and gritters running around all over the place. By the time it does snow there'll be no grit left lol

well i never even tried to get my van or kates van out of the street this morning , would never get them up the little incline......only 2 cars made it out first thing ( both range rovers ), just as well one of the range rovers was ours or kate would never have got to work.

So spending the day in my warm garage putting a 4.4 v8 engine back together listerning to the radio.

From our house in Whitley Bay we can look down Grafton Road to the sea. Noticed a very eerie/large looking snowstorm approaching a short while ago. Raced upstairs and took this from our bedroom window.

At least the lollypop lady adds a splash of colour to the scene !!!!! As I type its contents are being dumped on us. Roll on the summer.

home early :D

the roads on our trading estate in Burradon are a complete mare...so with dark clouds overhead and the fact that at least half a dozen cars/vans and lorries have all been stuck at various points throughout the day we could all leave at 1530 to beat the rush home

...better do last nights washing up then and have a cuppa ready for her coming in :D

You can hear the populations of Northern Europe, Norway ect laughing their socks off, after watching our news reports. Why cant a delegation visit these countries to see how it done

Aye Sid you are right, they cope fine with far worse conditions. We have a rapid thaw here in Whitley bay at the moment. If it continues there should be nowt left in the morning - hopefully !!!!

hateful, vile despicable stuff

where its lying flat we've now about 3 foot of the stuff. this time tomorrow, the way its belting down at present that will be 4

the winds getting up, so on past performance, the regular spots for drifts will be 12 to 15 feet by tomorrow night. Which means by brekkie time, it'll also be half way up the downstairs windows, which means the door has to be opened very slowly to reveal the white wall that has to be removed before you can even get out of the house. Last winter at one point I climbed out of the bedroom window onto a snow drift to start the excavation procedures

Land rover with all the off road toys and new all terrrain tyres - managed to move it 400 yards today. 200 of them I was a passenger as it turned into a 2.5 ton sledge going down the track

the first 200 yards took 4 hours

Anyone wants to have a real snow experience, drive to rookhope, and come on the blanchland to rookhope road...

we'll see you in april!

next couple of days, few rabbits and pheasants while there's some meat on em. leave em in the shed they'll be as frozen as they will in the freezer

there's also another rogue deer that won't be seeing christmas from the outside of the oven

officially worse than last winter now (according to me anyway)

just tried to get out, main A689 looks like:

12" or more of powder snow lying across the road - thats since the last plough went through early this morning

wind is blowing it in now, so the village is cut off, we just made it back through in the disco by just charging the snow drifts to get through them

and its still coming down

Had enough of the snow now :-( This was was Cullercoats this morning

snow photo's

snow photo's

Some knockout photo's posted recently, a lot of thought and time gone into them. i'm sure they're appreciated by all members. Has nesa ever published a calendar?

Maybe if, say 1 in 5 buses were fitted with studded tyres would this help to break the compacted ice up on the major routes?

one thing to point out is that "normally" we don't suffer this kind of weather in the UK (apart from those in the bundu) so our services aren't set up for it

If we were to start getting 2-3 months of "proper snow" (like we're getting now) on a regular annual basis then we would have cause to make comparison to Russia, Canada and the like...fact of the matter though is that currently these are "freak" conditions

...but I have yet to see a bloody gritter

Gritter and snow plough is going past my place in Pity Me Durham three or four times a day. Side streets are a mare but Durham council seems to be doing a pretty good job of keeping the main roads and bus routes going.

TGW is spot on with his comments, other places expect this kind of weather and are geared up for it, hence no disruption in Canada, Norway etc. We would have to invest millions to cope in a similar way and I can't see that happening for what are still rare bad weather occurances.
