Only caught 3 sole in my fishing life mate. I've had 2 off blyth pier and one at eyemouth. All caught on rag and at distance. All about the same size, small.

Had one off Seaham Pier over two pounds in a Comp. They get quite a few in summer months, but you do need to become a member to access the Pier....

Used to love my Sole fishing when I lived down south. Late summer evenings on the shingle fishing in shorts, staying very quiet and keeping strict light discipline. Sole give a great fight and taste fantastic as well.

A few tips from my experience: first up your bait needs to be absolutely nailed to the bottom so very short hook lengths close to the lead. Cast short (and very short), like most flatties Sole feed very close to the surfline. Keep your rod tip low in the rest - this helps keep the bait on the bottom esp with short casts. As already mentioned small hooks but don't skimp on bait - they can be greedy buggers. Rag and smelly lug do the job but don't tip off with fish. Give bites time to develop and keep your light off (and off the water) as they can be easily spooked.

Late summer and early autumn is generally seen as the best time. I'd love to find a consistent place to fish for them up here because as I said I love fishing for them:
