Songs That Make You Blub

OK, OK, I know that we're all "rufty tufty" sea anglers.....but you often find that it's those "rufty tufty" types who REALLY feel emotion.....especially when it comes to family, etc.

Following on from the recent "what you listening to" thread, I was wonderin' what songs do it for you....bring that burn to your thoat, that tear in your eye or that uncontrolable runny nose?.......

There are so many I could list which bring me to tears every time I hear them (just a big (well - not so big) softy, really).....and funnilly enough they all have the theme of kids (because I'm a dad, I guess).

This song in particular really gets my throat burning and my eyes streaming.......OK, I know there was a rather crappy version done by Ronan Keating a couple of years ago.....but the words of this song will strike a chord (no pun intended) with all dads (and indeed mams) out there.

Don't pay too much attention to the video - it's a bit naff, but this is the original version of this particular song, as done by Lee Ann Womack:

".......tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone....."

Here we go -

  • The Hovis Theme Tune
  • Jerusalem
  • The Dam Busters Thing
  • 2 million Voices
  • Something about you (level 42)
  • Anything by the Pogues
  • Old people or drunks about to die singing anything
  • Anything I happen to be listening to going through the Tyne Tunnel
  • Happy Birthday
  • Anything with Sting in it
  • ohhh and so many more

Lol Ian,....so are most Country albums :exclam:

You can't beat a sad Country ballard when it comes to emotions...lol

If you're gonna start talking' "classical"......have a listen to HENRYK GÓRECKI "symphony of sorrowful songs".......torture - concentration camps - winter - inhumanity - Nazi oppression............it's all there - what a bundle of laughs it isn't.......lol........................................but yes......it does have the same "burning throat effect"

Caught a bit of Desert Island Discs this week and it was that big tune that the Welsh lads always sing. I think they do it at the rugby as well. Loads of top old boys in smart blazers singing their tits off. I cried quite heavily at that.

And that - at the going down of the sun - just words but make me cry and want to wring my own neck at the stupidity and sadness we can rain down on our own nappers

Some canny choices there from Charlie and Steve......Just on a personal level though - I'm not so sure about the "nationalistic" ones "Jerusalem", "National Anthem" - even the "Dambusters March"....etc

I'll buy a flag when we get our country back.

Ooops - sorry - didn't mean this topic to become political in any way

Excellent post T.C....really set me thinking.. ..I could never understand why (geniunely was no reason at all) but the first time I ever heard Duran Duran ..Save a prayer..tears started streaming down my face, also Shipbuilding by Elvis costello got to me too ..apparently the first time John Peel heard Teenage Kicks by the undertones it made him cry too..
Heard it on a radio show once that a survey of people asked about a song that made them cry..a large portion of them answered "feed the birds from mary poppins"..on a similar theme...can anybody else say they watched the final episode of black adder (the one when they went over the top into no mans land) and didnt shed a tear..? sh*te I've just read what ive just put..sound like a bloody p**fter...(Tommy coughs embarassed.. pulls his shoulders back..gets his deep voice on.. right...about this fishin lads..lol..)

Lol Tommy.......the croak in the voice and the tear in the eye were just what I was on about when I mentioned about being "rufty tufty" sea anglers.......I'm sure we ALL have a song (or in my case, many songs) which reduce us to tears.......no shame (or point) in hiding that fact.....we're all human ......lol.....mind you......I'm not all sure I'd admit to Duran Duran song having that effect on me.......Takes guts to admit that......lol

Neil Diamond - Love on the rocks, Forever in Blue Jeans, Sweet Caroline... etc.....

Nomally reduces wor lass to tears when I put it on in the car!

The bairn normally starts crying too!

and the dog come to think about it!

Hhmmmm!!!

OK......as I've just said that there's no shame (or point) in hiding the fact that there are some songs that reduce us to tears..............Now - don't laugh if you click on this link........My mam used to play this song when I was a kid and it always had me cryin'......I've just done a YouTube search (not really expecting to find it - but sure enough, it's there).......as I said - don't laugh.....lol:

AhHa.....Don Williams.........getting better, Steve......lol

Neil Diamond ALWAYS makes me cry..........I usually cry "OH GOD, NO.......Not Neil Diamond Arghhhhhhhh".........lol

Lol at Steve and Tony.

Neil Diamond is one of my favourite solo artists. I found it quite amazing that you had posted about a song from the same film while I was having a search on youtube Steve lol.

Jim.

Cough, cough - (hand over my mouth) - very quietly

"I went to see him (THE JAZZ SINGER) last year at the Arena" zimmer frame and all he was pretty good. I was easily the youngest there by a good half century.
