however, maybe the black and white may help a little provocation :) :) .....

been giving this "assist hook" some thought ........
obviously it works else there wouldn't be the history and use of it, however I think the views that it attracts fish at the opposite end of the pirk is maybe not quite correct......
In my oppinion (IMHO) maybe this hook takes when the cod (or ling) strike dead side on to the prey fish (pirk), lets be honest from a hungry cods point of view taking from behind or from the front would reguire a full mouth swallow, however from the side would just require a "Big Bite", exactly the right shape of the mouth. think on how many fish may have been lost to norweigien pirks if the cod had struck the middle of the lead and ignored the ends ............ (probably still add a treble on some of them just in case :) :) )

hence rig the assist half way down the pirk ........

Dont suppose a cod is fussy which way it attacks a fish, front, rear or side....but i do think by using assist hooks you are upping the odds of hooking it :)....i'm off into the garage now to find my cordolene string line (white) ;) and octopus hooks, where do you get the shrink tube from Norman, and what size is it ?

got a selection of sizes off ebay but the size used in the end was 6mm (other smaller sizes will do nicely for electrickery work :)

You'll not go back to trebles after using them Norm. When you have a fish on you can feel it more as the lure hangs free and the line goes directly to the rod.I use a slightly different variation of a single heavier cord (not doubled) and a barrel swivel instead of ring.Ditch the trebles and save on lead!

Excellent read lads. I have often wondered what it would be like just using an assist hook on the jigger. I,m sick to death of using trbles on heavy jigs and snagging up losing the lot.
Going to buy another couple and use assist hooks only--see what happens.

Mick.

aye Mick , LK, it does seem a bit unusual not having a treble on the end to catch the wreck ... :) but ..... we'll just have to give it a go and see what happens .......
of course with no treble you'll have to rely on the fish coming to you instead of just yarking it off the bottom by the tail :D :D :D

icidentally the "speed jig rings" at that Ocean Tackle site have sold out...not due to me BTW...already have moved onto a large swivel alternative - just waiting for the next parcel from the posty to come through for the next batch of hooks to hit the assembly line :D

Well guys I've had a good read of this thread, at first I didn't have a clue what you were all talking about. Now I think I have the general idea. I've got two weeks to knock up some for myself. Fingers crossed. Cheers:D:D
