a lad called Ian caught a 3lb 9oz halibut of the pier, does anyone know where it was weighed and verified, as if it is a halibut it is the first I have recorded taken from the shore. Any info would be appreciated.

Yer i seen Brill and sol from that pier but never a Halibut, very deep water fish arnt they.

God knows our days, ribbon fish, sun fish, hake what next :)

it was a turbot

seemingly there was a hallibut caught at the 1st gate last year, but i would have said just a dark flounder

It's easy to tell the diferrence between a Halibut and a Turbot

A Halibut is a company owned by one of George Bushes mates

Turbots make cars go faster

And just to clear up any further argument

Plaice are where you are / is

Sole live on the bottom of your feet or somewhere between your heart and your brain

Flattys make you late for work or eligble for a breast augmentation on the NHS

Flounders is a bat and ball game for girls that smell of fish

QED - my time is done :red:

well I should have known, it was my mate Ian Ingleson, he is no stranger to big flat fish either, his best plaice is 4lb 6oz, what a belter that was, taken in the Newbiggin open way back in 1998.

it was weighed and verified by members of westoe angling club. and seen by20+anglers on pier last sunday. the lads name is Ian ingleson and comes from Stanley

it is the only halibut I have recorded for the North East coast taken from the shore, hopefully photo in Journal tomorrow, if not will post one, still working on it.

think there is no doubt it is a Halibut

Well done Ian, I wonder how it found it's way to our shores' probs just developed from the plankton and dropped to the sea bed, or maybe a discard coming back into port. no disrespect, well done again :)
