im thinking of fishing the stoney skeer at tynemouth and just wondering what distance i need to cast and whether i need to cast towards tynemouth pier, st marys light house or straight out. the reason i'm asking is i've just been reading the codling crouch and it says ‘the hole is literally at your feet', just wondering how far out the hole is

as the man says right at your feet, at times I have cast no more than ten yards and had fish. If you stand on the skeer and look directly east and make that 12 0'clock, turn to 10 o'clock that is where you acst, the distance you cast will depend on the size of the tide and how far it is in or out. If you are on the skeer, you will find a big boulder near the end where you stand normally, you should see weed beds appearing in between the waves, cast in front of them. Or you could try a cast straight at 12 0'clock, varying the distance each time. Best thing to do is wait for a really big tide and go down during the day with your camera and have a look and take some shots. stoney Bottom in my opinion is the best mark on the beach.

Have a look on bing maps Adam - they show the shape of the hole. As Alan says the rest is up to you and working out where the best of the hole is on that tide. Sign up for the N v S comp and I'll get Rod to show you - he had the heaviest fish there 2 years ago.

no mention of Stonet bottom on the map, it names it Bears head skeer

I know Al....all part of the fun of discovering the marks (are we thinking of the same lads marks? I suspect we are) However it doesn't take a genius to align the skeers on bing with the book......10 yards eh? bet you cast over most of them lol

have to say on a big tide and a good sea running I have literally dropped the bait from the end of my rod and caught. You can also access Stoney from the Boiler Skeer and drop it into the hole. To me lots of anglers cast far to far along our coast.
