advise please, does the tide flood from the north and edd to the south, just qurious as it may help in were food stuffs may lie.
thanks inadvance :)

Round these parts, ebbs northward, floods southerly as a rule - local features on beaches & rocks can affect this however (gullies, breakwaters, reefs etc.) so can vary greatly in some spots.

Gary :)

Easy way to remember for our area is
Flood to flamborough to the south
Ebb to Edinburgh to the north
Cheers

Funnily enough, i was looking on the net about this very subject a few months ago. I was looking for some sort or tidal flow map. Gave up in the end as going down too many blind allies.
if anyone know any nautical type sites this info is on, i would appreciate a link.

Cheers.

will have a look and see if I can find the current FLOW map I have somewhere, but basically it just says that the tidal flow South to North is stronger than the tidal flow South to North, that is how beaches south of the Tyne got the sxxt from the long out flow pipes up Newbiggin way. We all think the shore is where everybody's flotsam and jetsam and other rubbish goe,s, it dosn't think of the North sea as a big washing machine, all the rubbish goes right to the middle of the North sea.

Back and forward comes to mind,..........but I won't say it.:D .......Hell i'm getting bored:(

I thought they go round.
If I remember my geography lessons the tidal systems rotate around amphidromic points.
In, out, up, down, you do the hokey cokey and....

just posted this on the boat thread about tides and currents, some are getting muddled between tides and currents.

I used to say there was a two hour difference for the 10-12 mile wrecks
A bit of info for you it takes the worlds seas 500 years to circulate, the ice flows that cause this circulation by melting an dfreezing have been out of operation for a few years, if the seas stopped circulating they would become a stagnent mess, but it would take a long time to stop, think we are ok, although some think me and Sam have been around before Adam and Eve, that's before anybody else gets in.

Would agree with you Alan, about the 2 hour gap off side. In my Geography lessons I would show them a photo of high and low tide at Southport beach and Neist Point on the Isle of Skye. The tidal range is roughly the same but on Skye you can fish on the same rock all tide, at Southport the tide comes "in" about 2 miles..........how can that be?

Now let me show you some fishing photos from last summer.....................

No wonder they made me redundant lol

i am pleased that this has provoked some interesting answers and humour, i may not have originaly asked this question as i wondered....living in seahouses and being fully aware of the rip tide that floods between the inner farne and the beaches would this be in casting range at low water (i appreciate that wind and lift in the water will also affect food deposits but will learn this craft as i progress) this was also my initial thought down at craster between the carrs....all thought provoking stuff:rolleyes: (appolagies in advance if you think i'm being a T1T)

easy at Southport the beach's are level and no doubt nearer sea level, so a small rise in height would mean a greater distance covered, whereas the same rise in sea level will be negligible on a rocky coast which the top of the rock is no doubt well above sea level.

Alan,

As you have answered the question correctly and in more detail than is needed to explain the causes of WW1 and the Schleswig - Holstein crisis combined you automatically achieve an A* in A Level Geography, a place at a university of your choice and an overdraft facility the size of the National Debt.

Seriously it's really difficult for most to get their head around the rise and fall of the tide.....especially when the waves come in and out, not up and down.........

the university of life will do me, and as the learning goes on to your dying day, under the new rules governing students overdrafts I can borrow as much as I like so long as I pay back after studies finish and I get a job, so I will go to my grave a happy man.

I thought the tide went in and out, untill i fished eyemouth, this was my first experiance of the tides going up and down...

I seem to remember a very similar line in a book i read once, can quiet remember who the auther was though any ideas Stores?? :p
