Clubs only mate (officially),think lots of peeps climb around the gates though.Billy Brown would be able to tell which clubs use it if your interested !Never fished there for years,used to fish there all the time when i was younger,i used to stay at my Grans in Tynemouth,happy memories !
hmm ,it seems to me that a lot of fishing marks both sea and inland are going the way of the dodo unless you join the club/asociation that controls the fishing,id be interested to know how it works for the pier though,ie can you only fish at club meetings or do you get free reign once youve joined,i dont fancy paying money to join a club only to be told when i can and cant fish,i used to fish the tyne a lot, further up, but now everything above newburn is controled by clubs,in the good old days you could fish where and when you wanted ,happy days 
Firstly the clubs that fish the pier do not control the rights, the Port of Tyne controls the rights. And they say clubs only and only during club matches, dates having to be accepted by the Port of Tyne. It is either that or you do not fish at anytime. When you join a club they all have rules and regulations if you do not like fishing under certain constraints then dont join a club, fish when you like. Clubs are there for anglers to meet other anglers and compare tactics, organise leagues and trips, and in general help other anglers. there is no area on the Tyne that is contolled by a club most areas anyone can fish as long as they are legally accessible.

on top of licence fee a day permit is required or membership of the club
im not saying the clubs are a bad thing but how long before other piers ,ie roker blyth shields go the same way,and why just clubs,wouldnt a pay per fish fee work just as well allowing everyone access (not per individual fish),i was just recalling how things used to be and how they are now ,no slight or offence intended to clubs
Bri if its the upper Tyne i think it will be Salmon and Trout fishing which is controlled by clubs,its just when you mention permits and ponds etc leads me to think its Fly fishing,Not sure but i think alot of the land belongs to the Duke of Northumberland and he allows clubs to fish his land (not 100 % sure),i think as long as it is tidal you can fish it,like Alan says unless it is private property.
maybe alan f i just know there none too keen on you spinning up there any more ,the worlds getting a smaller place lol,i think before long ill be fishing the pond in the garden,at least i know ill catch something lol,just having a bit of a moan lol,permits for this permits for that ,ill need a permit for my permit next ,never mind roll on winter
had a look up wylam way a few weeks back,was firmly told flys only in addition to having to pay £20 for a days fishing,im gonna have to look into it as it maybe just someone trying to pull the wool so to speak,its either that or stick to the sea and the lakes,not really botherd about it as the seasons coming closer
already got me licence alan as its required for the lakes as well ,i fish the non migratory type but a lot of use it is on the river lol 
,didnt go up to do any fishing just to have a look see and make some enquires,your right about the start point newburn bridge up over tyne anglers association has the lease for that stretch with other clubs furthur up

The river Blyth was the same the other week after all the rain and storms,there was alsorts of junk floating down,probably crap thats been in the river bed for a while and the floods would have lifted it up.
I think generally the rivers are alot cleaner than they were a few years back IMO.

bri come and join our club we fish tynemouth pier more dates than other clubs on the pie.r come and see me and i will arrange a day as a guest for you and your mate, we are a friendly club with no fanatics just blokes that like to go fishing, longbenton and seatonburn s.a.c. we meet the first thursday of the month at forest hall
