Had a good 3nd a half hour session with only old bait from the weekend, 1st cast nice codling around 3/4lb then the pilot boat got me :mad:

Then switched to a two hook rig and got some good sport with a fish ever cast atleast, then the pilot boat got me AGAIN! :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
and then contined getting getting fish apart from on one chuck, count ended 9 codling, 3 coalies and a whiting... cracking bit sport dispite all being undersize.

Either the piolot boat is starting to some super close, or i've put on 6 stone and turned into Danny Moeskops!!!!

Last time I was down there about six weeks ago a lad wandered over and warned me about the pilot boat, said he'd lost two sets of gear as he had come in close on purpose to snag his lines. Fortunately he didn't come past while I was there to find out for myself. Perhaps a phone call or letter to the Port Authority explaining the possible consequences of a few anglers having £500 plus worth of gear pulled in by deliberate action with witnesses might encourage the powers that be to have a word with the driver?

As for the fishing well done on your session, undersize they may be but it still beats blanking.

When I was there the other day I did think the pilot was quite close, certainly closer than normal?
 
was on the first gate yesterday afternoon and a jetskie was coming close to the lines think it was police rib or lifeboat come and had a word with him . i waved to say thanks :D

Must be that 16ft rod of yours mate. Well done for not blanking and hard lines on the tackle loss.

I honestly can't believe that the river pilot would deliberately come in close to wipe out anglers gear, I mean why would he want to do that. It's such a juvenile action and their responsibility is guiding deep sea vessels into port safely.
 
i fish the river on the north side regular and he does come in close on purpose. it must give him some sort of sexual pleasure or summit coz it is on a regular basis.
the little bit power he's got must go to his massive head and tiny little brain :o
 
well i thort i was just getting better at casting untill reading this

was down on sunday and he was so close it was stupid i never saw him and cast which missed the side of the boat by about a foot when i grabbed my line and got a dirty look

we were floating and spinning on the steps at the bend when we seen the rib... thought we were gonna get a slapped wrist on the steps.... until I waved and he waved back.. I was like ok.. time to foul a launce :D

Just because the bloke has a very responsible job doesn't mean he can't also be an ar*ehole who gets pleasure from screwing up someones day. I can put a lead out and have never had a problem with either the big ships or the fishing boats when fishing the Walkway. This bloke was lucky if he was hitting 60 yards (mind you he had lost two lots of line to the Pilot) so the only explanation is he was coming in close on purpose to catch anglers lines. Its not as if he can't see the anglers and he has the whole river to use.
 
Unlucky mate, sounds like you had an experience with the "bad" pilot - there's more than one and more than one pilot boat. Fishing the north side by Cosalt's last week my mate & I were lucky enough to experience the "good" one - we were watching him approach & a couple of hundred yards away he turned his spotlight on & gave us a couple of flashes, then slowed down to give us time to get our gear in before pulling up alongside.

It meant we couldn't fish for about 20 minutes, but we had a bit craic with him (I think it was the same day that boat ran aground off the groyne) - apparently they're due to start dredging another 6-8 metres out of the main channel very soon to accommodate the big boats that'll be ferrying the new wind turbines that are going to be made up river. Also told us that it costs (the shipping companies) £45,000 every time the pilot boat goes out to do his thing:eek:

I've had similar experiences with a few boats coming & going from the Gut though; like you say a few seem to delight in slicing through angler's lines - there's one particular dinghy that usually zooms out of there without any warning very close to the fish-quay before turning round & heading over the other side. Then there's the tugs which pull up and sit off the quay while waiting for ships to come in, but at least they tend to approach quite slowly & once you've figured out that they're coming your way you generally have plenty of time to reel in. These days fishing the river it seems like you spend more time watching for boats than for bites:(

Well all I can say is that if he is doing it deliberately the guys got a mental health problem and shouldn't be doing the job he's doing

I myself have witnesed the Tyne Pilot (Collingwood) rather close navigation both day and night.This strange navigation happens outbound from the Walkway to the Groyne,however I fish Brighams/CallCenter and have saw the same.I agree 100% with the above post.

yeah, he did seem very close, with no attempt to move even slightly towards the middle of the river, and still caught my line dispite putting my rod tip down and into the water (yes it reached... 16ft rod haha:D) but still caught my line... might have been a different story if it was help up high, as if i didnt attempt to avoid getting my line caught.

I had to keep an eye out there after and was cautious with when i was casting... if he is trying to deture people fishing there, or fishing at distance? why? isn't possibly to be a asshole is it?
otherwise he'll find people lineing up with 10 leads and 10 shockleaders waiting for him to pass soon!
 
Had a few chucks on the walkway today and a few lads doing there nuts over boats going over there lines, every so often you hear a scream "ya f***ing w***er" lol. Same further down the tyne near the south shields ferry landing, could hear lads over north shields screaming at the boats.
