Has anybody actually ever been washed off Shields pier in living memory?

I overheard someone a few weeks back, telling a 'tourist' that someone had been washed off and never seen again in 1973.

True or false?

Was fishing the first gate in a big northeasterly swell and massive tide a few year back. Some bloke got washed about 100 yards down the pier from about 200 yards from the end, only thing stopped him going under the fence was his box

He looked like hed seen a ghost when he walked past us :o

been caught out a few time on the heugh when the seas have been lifting luckly enough it was just off the top deck onto the bottom never washed completely off

Same thing happened to me about 6 years ago now. Had been fishing the blocks over low water and the flood, was a dying north easterly stayed probs an hour longer than i should of which meant getting past the post/rubble became a problem. Swell came over inside of pier near rubble area only about a foot and half deep but it took me straight off my feet and carried me about 50 yards down pier. To say i got a shock is an understatement. Luckily i escaped with just cuts on my hands. Lesson learned and I'm a lot more cautious now.

I know of three anglers who have ben washed off on different occasions, one of them drowned the other two were plucked out of the sea by other anglers.

Never heard of anyone actually going missing, but that does not mean to say it has not happened.

Not a very safe place to be in a north easterly the end of that pier, but then wehre is?

seen a few near misses on seaham north pier.

two separate times seen guys knocked on their feet, dragged along the pier lookily not going in.

another occassion one night 2 lads i know of got stuck on the drum end as the tide came in.they had a hold of the light house door hadle as waves smashed the pier. they got off when the tide went out.

know a lad who got swept in off the old flat rock down hawthorn.
lookliy was able to climb back up .

not sure of shields , people just need to be careful.

Stay safe lads wen fishing this winter as it's a regular accrance each winter ppl falling foul of the conditions we often face wen out fishing. Fisherman

i remember 2 guys got washed off Shields pier in the late 80s early 90s. I was still at school but remember it being in the Gazette pretty sure only one got out, the lad who didnt was from Highfield road area. Ive got a photo on my wall of the North pier under a huge wave that was taken by a mates uncle the same day.

I've often wondered just how effective a flotation suit is in this sort of situation. I only really wear one to keep me warm/dry.

Has anyone on here ever gone into the sea wearing one and was it a life saver?

A self inflating lifejacket will self right you if you are knocked unconcious, although I have heard of people wearing flotation suits who have gone into the water and managed to get out alive, although they were concious the whole time.

Something to bear in mind when purchasing safety equipment
